Udupi, Jun 17: As the deadline for removing shrill horns has expired, Udupi traffic police inspected city buses and removed the shrill horns, along with imposing fines.

In a meeting held on June 3 with Udupi city and service bus owners, it was mandated that shrill horns installed in Udupi city and service buses be removed by June 15. As the deadline has passed, sub-inspector Sudharshan inspected the Udupi city bus stop and removed shrill horns from seven buses. Fines of Rs 500 per bus, totalling Rs 3,500, were imposed. There is a provision to impose a penalty of Rs 10,000 for a second offense.

Sub-inspector Sudharshan informed that many buses in Udupi had already removed the shrill horns before the deadline. As the inspection was conducted on Sunday and only a few buses were at the bus stop, the inspection will continue from Tuesday, followed by an inspection of service buses.

During the meeting, police officials also informed bus owners to remove music systems and speakers installed inside the buses.

I guess the drive failed miserably. This evening when I was returning home, I heard quite a few buses still blowing the same shrill air horn. So it is just a farce that has been happening over the years.

Why is the Traffic Police removing the shrill horns from the buses. It is not your job. You just have to go on issuing fines for non-compliance and soon enough, they themselves will ensure the shrill horns are not fitted. This way the bus wallas will learn the lesson and the Traffic Department will be benefiting.
