Udupi: Open street light power supply boxes opposite CMC pose danger

Udupi, Jul 10: Power supply control boxes beneath the street light poles along K M Road, opposite the City Municipality Council (CMC), are in a hazardous condition, posing significant danger to the public.

These electrical control boxes, often found with doors left open, present a particularly dangerous situation during the monsoon season. In some areas, the boxes have detached from the poles and are hanging precariously, creating obstacles for motorists. This not only poses a threat to drivers but also endangers children who might come into contact with these exposed electrical components.

The detached boxes are a potential cause of accidents, particularly for passing motorists. Additionally, the open doors of these electric control boxes pose a serious risk to pedestrians and commuters.

Nithyananda Volakad, a social worker, has voiced his concern, urging the authorities to take immediate action. "During the extension of K M Road, street lights were installed on the divider to enhance visibility at night. However, the power supply boxes have since rusted and are hanging dangerously. We have witnessed many incidents of electric shock, and these boxes, positioned at neck height, are particularly hazardous to motorists," he said.

Addressing the officials' response, Volakad added, "We brought this issue to the attention of the commissioner, who informed us that the tenure of the authorities responsible for this has ended and a new tender process is needed to address the situation." He emphasized the need for prompt action from the CMC to prevent any untoward incidents.

The Udupi City Municipality Council has been urged to prioritize the inspection and maintenance of these street light power supply boxes to ensure public safety.
