Udupi, Jul 22: Senior Journalist B B Shettigar was felicitated at a programme organised on the occasion of Press Day at Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Post Graduate Study Centre, Ajjerkadu on Monday, July 22.
Dr Vidya Kumari, deputy commissioner, Udupi, inaugurated the programme by traditional pouring the water on the Tulsi plant, and in her inaugural address said, “Journalism is working as a link to respond to the aspirations of the common people in the society by constructively creating every dimension.”
Highlighting the significance of news media in daily life, Dr Vidya Kumari said, “Everyone should develop the habit of reading newspapers in their daily lives. Newspapers work to provide information in every field including current news, political developments, and innovations in the world with clear authenticity. For those who have the habit of reading the newspaper every day, the day does not start without reading the newspaper. But in today's context, journalism is trying to maintain its existence in the midst of electronic and social media.”
Addressing the challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic, she said, “Most newspapers have suffered during Covid-19 and are recovering post-Covid. Along with the daily information, newspapers are also providing the students with the competitive topics and also the topics required by the public, thus newspapers are working to deliver the news as per the expectations of the public.”
Bhavya Nagaraj, lecturer of English at Government Girls' Pre-University College gave a lecture and explained in detail the way journalism has developed in the country and the state. "Journalism is developing day by day. In the meantime, journalism has made its own mark in society while facing many challenges," she said.
"Journalism inspires me to learn something new every day. Journalism has the power to inspire courage to face any kind of challenge," she said, adding that, there are ample opportunities in this field, not only those who have a degree in journalism, but also those who have the ability to think differently and have good writing style can engage themselves in the field of journalism.
Manjunath B, district press officer, in his introductory note said, “The Press Day was organised to give an overview of journalism to the common people, its background, the changed attitude from time to time and the changes to be made by those involved in the current profession. Journalism plays an important role in the all-round development and growth of human beings and has its own imprint in creating all kinds of awareness. In addition to this, the organisation has been making its own contribution to building society,” he said.
Rajesh Shetty Alevuru, president of the District Working Journalists' Association, explained in detail how daily journalistic activities are carried out, many people work hard while bringing out the newspaper. He said that different newspapers publish news in different styles and everyone should buy a newspaper and develop the habit of reading.
Prof Bhaskar Shetty, principal, Dr G Shankar Government Women's First Grade College and Post Graduate Studies Center, presided over the programme and said, “Although the newspaper has not got an institutional position constitutionally, it is the fourth arm of democracy in terms of personality and practice. If every journalist adheres to the religion of the press, the democratic system can be firmly rooted in the society.”
The programme was organised jointly by Dr G Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College and Post Graduate Centre, Ajjerkadu and the Udupi District Working Journalist Association, district administration, news and public relation department.
Manjunath B welcomed the gathering. Nazeer Polya, secretary, Udupi District Working Journalists Association proposed a vote of thanks. Ajith introduced the dignitaries. Ashwini, a journalism student emceed the ceremony.
