Udupi, Jul 23: In a remarkable medical advancement, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, has successfully performed an innovative endoscopic procedure known as Endoultrasound-guided Gastrojejunostomy (EUS-GJ). The procedure was performed on an elderly gentleman, suffering from malignancy-induced gastric outlet obstruction, which had rendered him unable to eat food.
The medical team, led by Dr Shiran Shetty, professor of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, decided to undertake this cutting-edge procedure under minimal sedation. Dr Shiran Shetty explained, "This is an innovation from Japanese endoscopists that connects the stomach to the small intestine, thereby bypassing the obstruction and allowing the patient to take food orally."
The patient responded well to the procedure, started taking food orally, and was discharged with 48 hours later. Dr Ganesh Bhat, Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, highlighted the benefits of this minimally invasive procedure, stating, "Since it is done under minimal sedation, the hospital stay is very short, allowing for discharge within two days after the procedure. This was performed in our new state-of-the-art endoscopy room."
