Udupi, Jul 27: The Koraga community's protest, ongoing for six days, has demanded land titles and employment opportunities. On July 27, Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti Ambedkar extended its support to the protesters.
Sundar Master, district chief organiser, stated, “The Koraga community is among the most marginalised groups. They are fighting for land titles and employment, which are crucial for a dignified life. Although the Koraga community is included in the reservation category, the benefits are going to other communities with slightly higher advantages.”
He added, “Separate reservation for the Koraga community should be implemented. At least 1% reservation should be allocated; this is not a significant request from the government. If the state government forwards the resolution to the central government, justice for the Koraga community can be achieved. Additionally, cleaning work should involve all communities. If everyone participates, the country will be cleaner. On the sixth day of the protest, a hunger strike might be the last option for them to seek justice.”
Advocate Manjunath Giliar criticised the ongoing struggle for rights despite independence, saying, “People fighting for their rights are often arrested. The Koraga community, after their struggle, received land deeds and has used the land productively, leading a decent life. Their situation remains unchanged regardless of the ruling party. I had urged people to vote for Congress with hopes of improvement, but I am sceptical about real progress. Lakshmi Hebbalkar, the in-charge minister, has not held a single Dalit meeting since her appointment. Congress seems to be dreaming of permanent power after announcing the guarantee schemes.”
Shyamraj Birthee added, “The government should take possession of vacant land and allocate it to the Koraga community. Securing land would boost their self-confidence. Since Congress came to power, exploitation of the Koraga community has increased. The Dalit Sangharsha Committee will continue to support the Koraga community.”
Others present included Kumar Kota, Shankar Das, Harish Chandra, Baskhar Master, Shivanand Moodubettu, Shridhar Kunjibettu, Mohan, Sushila Nada, president of the Koraga Development Committee Union Vinaya Adve, secretary Pavitra, vice-president Dinakar, treasurer, and others.
