Udupi, Jul 31: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader pledged that the demands of the Koraga community would be scrutinised and discussed to determine which could be fulfilled. This statement came after he received a memorandum from the Koraga community at the DC's office in Manipal on July 31.

At the protest site, Khader acknowledged the importance of the Koraga community and reaffirmed his commitment to their welfare.

He noted, “The memorandum and demands of the Koraga community will be discussed with all levels of authorities. During my tenure as Health Minister, I had introduced several schemes to support the Koraga community. We have always recognized the Koraga community as a vital part of our society and have endeavored to meet your needs.”

He also emphasised the critical role of education in addressing many of their issues and urged parents to prioritise their children’s education.

To improve job prospects for educated members of the Koraga community, Khader instructed Dr Vidya Kumari, Deputy Commissioner, to compile a list of those who have graduated or completed their Pre-University courses. This list will be used to identify job opportunities in the outsourcing sector.

Addressing concerns about the recent rainfall in Coastal Karnataka, Khader expressed hopes that the rain would be beneficial without causing damage, such as coastal erosion.

He stated, “Rainfall is crucial, but I wish the rain does not cause any damage. The rainfall of two months will be used for the next 10 years, therefore I wish for more rainfall without any natural damage. The government should implement new regulations to prevent natural calamities. These rules must be followed by people to ensure that buildings are constructed scientifically.”

On the topic of the M11 industry in Nandikoor, Khader assured that the industry is required to avoid environmental pollution and contribute positively to regional development.

He commented, “This industry has various branches, but no significant environmental issues have been reported concerning the industry. The concern about the industry should have been raised earlier before the permission was granted for the construction. It is important to welcome investors to support local economic growth.”

Khader also expressed sorrow over the recent tragedy in Kerala’s Wayanad district, remarking, “I have seen such an incident for the first time in my life. Natural disaster is God’s creation; we cannot stop it, but such mishaps can be prevented if people make an effort. Accidents caused by human error can be avoided. This land is not just our property; there are millions of people yet to be born and raised. A better land should be left for future generations. Buildings are constructed unscientifically, with no way for water to flow. Incidents like this occur when the accumulated water becomes stagnant.”

Sushila Nada, president of the Koraga Community Development Associations Unit, clarified, “The protest is not against any government or political party. Despite progress in education within the community, they are struggling to find jobs matching their qualifications.”

The event was attended by Dr Arun Kumar, superintendent of police, Ramesh Kanchan, president of the Block Congress, and other officials including Congress leaders Veronica Cornelio and Sunitha Shetty.
