Udupi: Scooter catches fire near petrol pump, major mishap averted

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (JD)

Udupi, Oct 19: A two-wheeler was completely destroyed by fire late Friday night after petrol stored inside the scooter’s under seat storage leaked and ignited near a petrol pump in the Chitpady area of Udupi city.

The scooter owner had purchased petrol in a bottle from the petrol pump and stored it inside the vehicle’s under seat storage. When he attempted to kick-start the scooter, a spark from the engine ignited the leaking petrol, setting the two-wheeler on fire.

The scooter was entirely engulfed in flames, but quick action by the petrol pump staff and locals helped avert a major disaster. Using fire extinguishers available at the pump, they managed to douse the flames before they could spread. The fire occurred close to the petrol pump, where several vehicles, including buses, were parked, making the timely intervention crucial in preventing a more serious incident.

No injuries were reported, but the scooter was completely destroyed in the fire.

Petrol should be strictly banned for sale, loose, in containers as it can be used for various destructive activities besides the chances of such accidents!

Kujuma Sir, we understand your frustrations of living in a third-world, corrupt country infested by Hindus. Being a First Class Citizen, you should seriously consider migrating to a Developed Country.

It's very common to see petrol bunks freely dispensing petrol in retail in plastic bottles, which should be stopped; no idea whether it's legal to sell petrol in plastic bottles!

The Petroleum Act of 1934 states that petrol can only be sold in containers made of glass, stoneware or metal. Plastic bottles not allowed.

Asper NFPA, Petrol/ or any highly vaporizing fuel can not be stored or carry in glass bottles as chances of bottle blast due to environment and other conditions. Only metal containers are allowed

A lack of Education and safety. This is long practice due to remote areas where not able to come refill the petrol every time. We need to educate the people for fire safety and hazardous materials.

Illegal acts of petrol purchase -- why did the scooter owner purchase petrol -- and kept in a bottle-- purpose ???-- Petrol bunk owners are warned strictly not to sell loose -petrol -- due to incidents of self-immolation or committing crimes -- committing murders with petrol --etc. -- or carry only in specific containers meant for gasoline only --

Timely action by the petrol pump people prevented a disaster. Otherwise, the whole area would have been under fire by now

Hello sir, As you read you in the news..it's not timely action of petrol pump employees. The scooter rider itself took the scooter away from petrol pump. Then only the pump employees doused the fire by using fire extinguisher.
