Udupi, Nov 9: A crane involved in pulling girders during the Indrali railway overbridge construction overturned late Thursday night.

The process of joining and welding girders is ongoing around the clock. Two cranes are being used to lift the girders, each weighing nearly one tonne.

On Thursday night, one of the cranes overturned after its rope snapped in the middle of the road. Fortunately, there were no labourers nearby, so no injuries were reported.

The overturned crane was lifted using another crane at the site. As it happened at night, a major tragedy was averted. During the daytime, this area sees heavy traffic with numerous vehicles and pedestrians, and a nearby petrol pump could have been at risk of damage.

THIRD CLASS POOR QUALITY SCOPE OF WORK AND LIFTING EQUIPMENT LEADS TO SUCH DISASTERS. ITS CALLED 'HIT AND MISS WORKS OF ENGINEERING. A GIRDER WEIGHING ONE TON SHOULD BE LIFTED WITH A CRANE OF TWO TON LIFTING CAPACITY AND NOT HALF A TON, THEREFORE, THE CRANE GOT LIFTED.
