Brahmavar, Nov 27: A Kerala resident, Biju Yohannan (42) from Kottarakkara, Kollam, died while in police custody at Brahmavar police station. His family is preparing to file a complaint with the Kerala chief minister and the human rights commission, seeking action against those responsible for his death.

“We demand strict action against those involved in my brother's death. We plan to lodge a complaint with the Kerala chief minister and the human rights commission as soon as we receive the post-mortem and forensic reports,” said Biju’s brother, Binu Yohannan.

Binu added, “The police informed us that my brother collapsed in the restroom. However, when we viewed the body with permission from the district magistrate, we noticed injuries on his knees and thighs, raising suspicions.”

Binu also stated that Biju, who had completed ITI, was in Brahmavar for only 12 days, working at a nearby shipyard.

“The police claimed he had consumed alcohol, but they did not conduct a medical examination. We also spoke to his landlord, who did not have any negative remarks about him. A woman reportedly lodged a complaint against my brother, but we have not been provided with a copy of it,” he said.

The CID police are investigating the case. Meanwhile, Brahmavar sub-inspector Madhu P and acting station officer Sujata were suspended for failing to follow Supreme Court guidelines regarding the arrest of accused persons.

“The CID is investigating the case of the death of the person in police custody. We have no information about the family’s plans to approach the Kerala chief minister,” said district superintendent of police Arun K.

Difficult to say if he died out of shock and anxiety or police brutality at this stage... There will be departmental covering up but truth should be out sooner or later... We don't know the background of things that led to his arrest and whole thing will be a guess work to say any comment... RIP to the departed soul...
