Mangalore, Jan 18: Anantha Rajendra, a lecturer and his wife Vijaya Kumari had a narrow escape when their Omni car caught fire near Pumpwell on Wednesday January 18.

They were traveling to Yermal from Panemangaluru to attend a house warming ceremony. They filled gas at Capitano petrol pump after which, on reaching Pumpwell, both sensed a smell of smoke in the car.

Vijaya suggested to her husband that they get out of the car. It was a miraculous escape for both as the car caught fire as soon as they alighted.

The Omni bearing the number KA-19-P-8757 was totally charred.

Fire service rushed to the spot and douse the fire. A large number of people gathered at the spot and helped.

yeah even i agree about the risk involved, actually these vehicles have to undergo a periodic examination of tanks at the test centres and get certified. moreover the bunks are not supposed to fill gas for those tanks which is not been tested.

Most Fires are caused after filling up of LPG at filling stations.
The reason is- the filling staff are not closing the cap properly after filling up.
If CNG is introduced these disasters can be prevented, but the question is WHEN our petroleum dealers introduce it in Mangalore?

yes it s true all omni school vans in mangalore run on lpg. i think govt shud regulate vehicles carrying school children. after two fire accidents involving school buses in mumbai, there one needs special permission for vehicles to carry school children.these vehicles have fire extinguishers and have an annual inspection.mumbai is also in india, why can t same rules be applied.hope some lawyers will file a p i l in this regard

LPG powered vehicles are very much susceptible to short circuit and fire. Many lives have been lost, this couple is indeed very lucky! Mostly these fires are the result of cheap quality (duplicate) cylinder and kit!!
