Udupi, Jun 13: On the occasion of Global Fatty Liver Day, Adarsha Hospital, Udupi, organized a Liver Health Screening Camp at its New OPD block on Thursday, June 13. The camp aimed to raise awareness about liver health, early detection of liver-related ailments, and promote preventive care among the public.

The camp was inaugurated with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony by dignitaries Adarsha Hospital CEO Vimala Chandrashekar, Adarsha Hospital director Dr G S Chandrashekar, and consultant gastroenterology, Adarsha Hospital Dr Satish K Nayak.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr G S Chandrashekar Hospital’s director, highlighted the importance of preventive health care, said, “Adarsha Hospital has consistently conducted such health initiatives to raise awareness among the public. The goal of observing Global Fatty Liver Day is not only to inform people but to emphasize the importance of prevention.

As doctors, our responsibility extends beyond treating diseases, we must also work to prevent them. Liver cirrhosis cannot be reversed, so early detection through awareness camps is crucial. Conditions like diabetes can also lead to liver issues. The two leading causes of liver problems are fat accumulation and alcohol consumption, which affect people across all walks of life. Cirrhosis develops gradually, often due to obesity and unhealthy habits. While medical advancements have been significant, not everyone can afford expensive treatments. Hence, avoiding harmful habits is the best way to prevent fatty liver”.

In an awareness session, Dr Satish K Nayak, consultant gastroenterology, explained the implications of fatty liver disease, said, “Fatty liver occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver cells, gradually damaging them and impairing liver function. Alarmingly, even when up to 30% of the liver is damaged, symptoms may not appear. It is only after about 50% of the liver is affected that signs become noticeable, which is why early detection and treatment are essential.

The primary cause of fatty liver is alcohol consumption, though other risk factors such as obesity and diabetes also contribute. If left unchecked, fatty liver can progress to cirrhosis and potentially liver cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular exercise is vital. Leading a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of obesity. Sugar, in today’s context, is like the new alcohol, it disrupts metabolism and promotes fat buildup in the liver. Lifestyle changes such as gradual weight loss, reducing processed foods, eating more fruits, staying disciplined with food habits, daily brisk walking for at least 30 minutes, weight training, and avoiding alcohol and tobacco can significantly help in preventing fatty liver disease”.

The screening camp offered free services, including registration and consultation, Liver function tests, HBsAg and HCV testing, FibroScan analysis and diet consultation.

The inaugural event began with a prayer by the hospital staff. Anushree Acharya compered the programme.

Medical officer Adani Power Corporation Udupi Dr Pabhudeva, Dr Sunil, nephrologist Dr Megha Pai, gynaecologist Dr Ranjitha Nayak, cardiologist Dr Shrikanth, students, participants, staff and others were present on the occasion.
