Mangaluru, Jul 27: In a major breakthrough, the Urwa Police have arrested a long-absconding accused in connection with the 2014 Bejai Bharathi Builders shootout case, linked to the notorious underworld figure Ravi Poojary.

According to police sources, a case was registered under Crime No. 23/2014 at the Urwa police station under IPC Sections 447, 120(B), 307, and Section 27 of the Arms Act. The accused, identified as Ganesh Lakshman Sakat from Karad, Maharashtra, had been on the run since 2015 after failing to appear before the court.

The Third JMFC Court in Mangaluru had issued a warrant against him. Acting on credible information and under the direction of the honourable police commissioner, a team from the Urwa police station comprising ASI Venugopal and constables HC 949 Pramod, HC 956 Narayan, and HC 622 Govindaraj, apprehended Ganesh in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, on July 27. He was subsequently produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

Further investigations have revealed that Ganesh Sakat is also an accused in another case registered at Kavoor Police Station under Crime No. 44/2014 for offences under IPC Sections 448, 507, 120(B), and 34, for which another warrant had been issued by the court.

In addition to these cases, a separate Arms Act case is also reportedly pending against him in Karad, Satara district, Maharashtra.

This arrest marks a significant development in the efforts of Mangaluru police to track down associates of underworld operatives and bring long-pending cases to justice.
