Bengaluru, Jul 30: In a major breakthrough, Nelamangala Town police have arrested two habitual offenders who allegedly burgled an engineer’s house and made away with gold jewellery worth Rs 56 lac.

The accused, identified as Jayant alias Battery Jayant and Yateesh, were nabbed following a meticulous investigation into the burglary that took place in Vajrahalli George Layout of Nelamangala. Police said the accused had observed that the house was vacant before striking.

The duo reportedly stole around 650 grams of gold ornaments and fled the spot on a bike. Their movements were caught on CCTV cameras installed in the locality, helping police identify and track them.

Upon arrest, the police recovered 343 grams of stolen gold from the accused. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the remaining jewellery had already been sold off in parts.

The investigation further uncovered that the two were seasoned criminals, with over 25 to 26 criminal cases registered against them in the past. Both have now been remanded to judicial custody.

The house owner, shocked by the incident, has urged authorities to impose stringent punishment on the accused given their extensive criminal background.

The case serves as a stern reminder of the increasing need for neighbourhood vigilance and improved security measures, especially during long absences from home.
