Mangaluru, July 31: Kathyayini Sanjeeva Rao (90), a revered figure known for her deep religious devotion and philanthropic contributions to temple restoration and education, passed away on Thursday afternoon at her residence in Katilu, near Surathkal in Mangaluru taluk.
She was the wife of the late Sanjeeva Rao, who had run a tailoring business in Vile Parle, Mumbai. A generous benefactor and devout follower of Lord Krishna, Kathyayini Rao was widely respected for her unwavering support to numerous religious institutions. Her contributions extended to the Kateel Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple, several temples under the Udupi Ashta Mathas, and various Daiva shrines across Karnataka and Mumbai.

Beyond her religious involvement, she was known for her social contributions — especially towards children’s education. Through scholarships and academic aid, she quietly supported the academic pursuits of many underprivileged students.
As a tribute to her values and enduring commitment to community service, her son Dr Suresh S Rao Katilu, a prominent Tulu-Kannadiga physician in Mumbai, established Sanjeevani Hospital in both Mumbai and Katilu. The hospital continues to serve the community with a focus on compassionate care.
Dr Suresh Rao, a highly regarded medical consultant, is the managing director of Sanjeevani Hospital, former president of the Association of Medical Consultants (Mumbai), and an active member of the Indian Medical Association and Maharashtra Medical Council.
Kathyayini Rao is survived by two sons, including Dr Suresh Rao, three daughters, and a large extended family.
Her passing was met with widespread grief. Family, friends, and local residents gathered to pay their final respects. Many prominent figures and organisations expressed condolences, including office-bearers and members of BSKBA (Gokul) and the Gopalakrishna Public Trust. Hundreds of well-known individuals from Mumbai and beyond offered tributes, extending their sympathies to the bereaved Rao family.
