Kasargod: Six cops suspended for leaking sand mafia ops, taking bribes

Kasargod, Jul 31: In a major crackdown on police-mafia nexus, six personnel from Kumbla police station have been suspended for allegedly leaking confidential information to the illegal sand mafia and accepting bribes in return.

The action came after Kasaragod district superintendent of police Vijay Bharat Reddy issued suspension orders based on a report from Kumbla Station House Officer Sreejith. The officers were found to have maintained close contact with the mafia and tipped them off about impending raids.

Those suspended include constables P M Abdul Salam, Vinod Kumar, Lineesh, K Anoop, Manu, and police driver Krishna Prasad.

The scandal unraveled during an investigation into illegal sand transportation when a tipper truck and its driver were taken into custody. During interrogation and scrutiny of the driver’s mobile phone, police discovered incriminating evidence — including call logs, messages, and contact history — confirming the officers' links with the accused mafia operators.

Sources revealed that these policemen routinely alerted the sand mafia ahead of planned enforcement actions in exchange for kickbacks. This allowed the mafia to escape raids and continue illegal sand mining activities unabated.

Following the findings, SP Vijay Bharat Reddy acted swiftly and suspended all six involved, pending a full departmental probe. The incident has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about corruption within the force. Further disciplinary and legal action is expected as investigations continue.
