New Delhi, Aug 17: Eating over 60 grams of almonds daily could do more than curb hunger—it may help protect DNA and reduce oxidative stress, according to new research. Oxidative stress, caused by free radicals, accelerates aging, inflammation, and chronic diseases.
Almonds, rich in vitamin E, healthy fats, and antioxidants, help neutralise these harmful molecules, supporting cellular health and immune function. Studies show consistent almond intake may even slow signs of aging.
Earlier research, including a randomized trial with 84 g almonds daily, revealed significant reductions in DNA damage, lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress biomarkers. Experts say the 60 g daily threshold, roughly 40–45 almonds, provides maximum antioxidant benefits.
Almonds’ nutrients, including flavonoids and polyphenols, protect cell membranes and DNA, reduce inflammation, and promote heart and brain health. Practical ways to reach 60 g include snacking, adding to smoothies, sprinkling on meals, or using almond butter.
The findings underscore almonds as a natural superfood, offering benefits from energy boost to long-term cellular protection.
