Ullal, Oct 21: In a remarkable display of unity that transcended caste, religion, and creed, the Ullal City Mahila Congress organized a Harmony Diwali celebration that spread the message of peace, harmony, and brotherhood. Women and children from Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities actively participated, making the event a vibrant celebration of togetherness.

Transforming the festival of lights into a true festival of unity, the celebration rekindled Ullal’s long-standing secular tradition. In a city where even small issues can create discord, this Diwali event symbolized a bold step toward peace and communal harmony.

Held at the Tokkottu Block Congress Office, the programme featured sports events for women, fun learning games for children, and cultural performances. The sight of children from all communities playing, laughing, and sharing joy beautifully reflected the true spirit of harmony. The event, organized under the leadership of Ullal City Mahila Congress president Amitha, was the first of its kind and a great success. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the Congress Party’s secular ideals.

Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly U T Khader, who is currently abroad, extended his Diwali greetings through social media, saying:

"The festival of lights is not just about celebration — it’s a symbol of unity against darkness. Let us live in the light of togetherness beyond caste, religion, language, or color."

The celebration, glowing with the light of peace and cultural unity, became a model for the entire city.

Speeches and highlights:

Shameema Kuthar, president of All India Beary Women’s Council and a noted writer, emphasized that women’s representation must continue to grow. She noted that sometimes women are denied opportunities under the pretext of ‘representation.’ A woman, she said, often sacrifices her happiness for her family’s well-being. A happy and healthy woman makes every festival complete. Women’s emotions, struggles, and dreams can be expressed through poetry, literature, and art but they must also find their voice in public platforms. She urged women to break their societal chains, step beyond comfort zones, and showcase their strength, saying, “Where a woman is respected, God resides.”

Prabhakar Neerumarga, former deputy registrar of Mangalore University, said India has always been an agrarian nation, with festivals rooted in agricultural traditions. Understanding the true meaning of festivals, he said, is everyone’s responsibility.

Jayavanti Soans, school headmistress, said women are no longer confined to kitchens; from cooking to flying planes, they have excelled in all fields. She encouraged the use of eco-friendly crackers to protect the environment.

Block Congress President Ramesh Shetty Boliyar praised the successful event and announced several developmental projects: Rs 200 cr for the Boliyar–Kotekar bridge, Rs 6 cr for the tourism road to Kandala Van, and Rs 200 cr for underground cable work to solve electricity issues. He added that U T Khader’s contributions to Ullal are unforgettable and that 40 women were recently taken to witness the Assembly session. A large women’s convention is also planned soon.

Ullal City Congress president Mustafa lauded Amitha’s efforts, noting that she organized the program at her own expense. He said, ‘In politics, you must face the ball — not watch who’s bowling it.’

Industrialist Prakash Kumpala said the event united Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, adding that women are Khader’s true strength. “A wife brings peace to the home; a mother is the one who propels her son forward,” he said, urging women to strengthen their organizations and celebrate Varalakshmi Puja collectively.

MUDA chairman Sadashiva Ullal stated that many leaders have emerged from the Mahila Congress and that women must continue to uphold and strengthen the party’s secular principles.

District Congress general secretary Rahiman Kodijal said, “Whatever women take up, they succeed. May such events grow and may our bonds flourish like golden paddy fields. Let service flow like water — never stagnant.” He emphasized collective efforts to build a better city.

Amitha Ullal, the chief organizer, said discipline perfects a person and makes life better. She stated, “Women’s representation is not just a right — it is a symbol of social strength. Let women step forward in all fields, work in unity, and ensure peace and equality in society. That is the true essence of this celebration.”

Other dignitaries present included Block vice president Dinesh Rai Ullalagutthu, Razia Ibrahim, Backward Classes president Vivekananda Sanil, Usha Shetty, youth leader U T Fareed, Mansoor Manchila, and Shakir.

Amitha Ashwin welcomed the gathering, Mustafa Abdullah proposed the vote of thanks, and Sannidhi compered the programme.
