Mangalore, Oct 23: Yenepoya Medical College Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangaluru, has clarified reports circulating in certain media portals and social media regarding a patient allegedly declared dead and later “waking up during cremation.”
The patient, Ramanatha Gatty, son of Kariyappa Gatty of Rama Nagara, Kanchikatte, Kumble, Kasragod, was admitted to Yenepoya Medical College Hospital on October 14 at 5:59 am. He had developed sudden weakness in all four limbs, unconsciousness, and ceased responding. Earlier, he had visited Wenlock Hospital, which could not admit him due to the unavailability of a critical care bed.

The hospital clarified that Gatty was put on artificial ventilation and provided with appropriate medical care and medications. On October 19, his relatives insisted on taking him out of the hospital against medical advice. Doctors had clearly explained the need for continued care at the hospital. Nevertheless, the relatives signed an Against Medical Advice Discharge Consent Form and transported the patient in a hired ambulance with an oxygen mask in place, ensuring continued oxygen support during transit.
Yenepoya Medical College Hospital emphasized the following:
1. Ramanatha Gatty was alive when he left the hospital.
2. The patient’s discharge was against medical advice on October 19.
3. The claim that the patient was kept in a freezer at the hospital is entirely false. He was transported by relatives with oxygen support.
4. The spread of this misinformation has adversely affected the reputation and credibility of the hospital.
The hospital has urged the public and media outlets to verify facts before publishing reports to prevent the spread of false information that may damage the institution’s standing.
