Mumbai, Jan 19: Panic gripped parts of Mumbai after a shocking firing incident was reported in the Oshiwara area on Sunday. An unidentified person allegedly opened fire at Nalanda Society, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Oshiwara police station, before fleeing the spot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information and launched a search for the accused. CCTV footage from the building and surrounding areas is being examined, along with technical surveillance, to trace the shooter. However, the incident has triggered fear and anxiety among residents in the locality.

Meanwhile, tensions escalated further in the city following a clash involving supporters of BJP MLA Mahesh Chougule and former mayor Vilas Patil. Supporters of the MLA allegedly resorted to stone-pelting at the bungalow of former mayor Vilas Patil, leading to chaos in the area.

Following the attack, Vilas Patil, along with his wife and former mayor Pratibha Vilas Patil, their son Mayuresh Patil and supporters, staged a protest by sitting on the road at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk. As a BJP office is also located in the same area, a large number of BJP supporters gathered at the spot, leading to heightened tension.

The situation worsened when heavy stone-pelting and glass bottle throwing were reported from the BJP supporters’ side. Police were deployed in large numbers to control the situation. Despite efforts to restore calm, the atmosphere remained tense.

Former mayor Vilas Patil accused the police machinery of failure, alleging lapses in maintaining law and order. During the clashes, two persons sustained serious injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Shashikant Borate told the media that intense stone-pelting took place between the two groups and police personnel were also assaulted during the violence. He said a lathi charge was carried out to disperse the crowd and assured that strict action would be taken against those found guilty.
