Kundapur: Online cricket betting racket busted; youth held

Kundapur, Feb 10: Kota police took a youth into custody for allegedly engaging in illegal online cricket betting related to the World Cup T20 cricket matches. The incident occurred at a public place on Pandeshwar Road, near Coastal Paradise Hotel in Pandeshwar village limits.

The accused has been identified as Manith (26), a resident of Hangarkatte in Balkudru village of Brahmavar taluk. Acting on credible information received on February 9 about ongoing cricket betting activities, Kota police sub-inspector Praveen Kumar R, along with his staff, conducted a raid at the spot.

During the operation, members of the public who were involved in betting fled the scene, while Manith, who was allegedly conducting the betting, was apprehended by the police. An iPhone mobile phone used for online cricket betting and cash amounting to Rs 800, believed to be betting money, were seized from his possession.

Investigations revealed that the accused was illegally engaging in organised online betting through a mobile application in connection with the Oman versus Zimbabwe cricket match, in collusion with others.

A case has been registered at the Kota police station in this regard. The accused has been produced before the court.
