Mangaluru, Jul 20: Dakshina Kannada District Mahila Congress has strongly condemned the brutal murder of a young woman at BC Road and demanded that stringent legal provisions be invoked to ensure the accused is denied bail and awarded the harshest punishment.

Addressing a press conference at the Dakshina Kannada District Congress office on Monday, S Appi, president of the Dakshina Kannada District Mahila Congress (City Unit), said the incident had created an atmosphere of fear regarding the safety of women in a male-dominated society.

She said it was unfortunate that young people, who should be contributing to the nation's progress, were instead resorting to violent crimes. Referring to the continued incidents of violence, atrocities and crimes against women, she said such acts reflected social inequality and a decline in humanity, leaving society deeply disturbed.

Expressing concern over the direction in which the younger generation was heading, Appi said the incident had raised serious questions about the values being passed on and called for efforts to identify the factors and "hidden hands" behind such crimes.

She urged the government to strengthen laws to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and called for enhanced security measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras and other safety infrastructure at bus stands.

Appi also appealed to the public to intervene and help prevent such incidents instead of merely recording them on mobile phones. She further said the Mahila Congress would urge the chief minister to provide adequate compensation to the victim's family.

Mahila Congress leaders Veena Benedict, Geetha Praveen, Kala Jyothi, Vrinda, Shanthala Gatti and Chanchalakshi were present at the press conference.
