Bahrain, Aug 16: Vithal Shetty, a well-known restaurateur, will be retiring shortly and returning to India after 35 years in Bahrain, after running some of the most popular Indian restaurants here.

The personal touch is something special to him as it was what exactly which made his restaurants popular. Besides being an active member in many organizations, Shetty, was also a philanthropist who provided humanitarian assistance to many distressed workers in Bahrain. He said that the key to success in the restaurant business was developing a personal relationship with customers.

“I am very sad to leave Bahrain, but as with anything else, everything must come to an end. I thank everyone who helped me to reach where I am now. I would like to thank them all personally but there are just so many of them,” he added.

Shetty first came to Bahrain 35 years ago in 1977. He started working for Cable and Wireless (now known as Batelco) where he worked for 10 years. In his early years in Bahrain he helped in establishing the Bahrain Kannada Sangha, of which he is one of the founding members.

After gathering enough savings and meeting with business partners, Shetty started Central Cafe followed by Shringar, Parijatha and Woodlands restaurant. “Shringar was a very well known restaurant and I was even known by the people as 'Shringar Shetty'”, he said. In 2004 he started Chef's Corner, after which he decided to put up Classic Restaurant Management WLL, which is a restaurant management business.

“Now I will devote myself to society when I go back to Mangalore,” said Shetty who will be joined by his wife Yashoda. He also has two married daughters Natasha and Ramya, son-in-laws Prashant and Sandeep and a grandson, Shlok.
