Chile is top country in Latin America for broadband

Bogota, Jun 7 (IANS/EFE): Chile has the highest 2-megabyte broadband Internet penetration rate for landline and mobile connections in Latin America, a report released in Bogota said.

Chile is the leader in broadband landline connections, with an 11.3 percent penetration rate as of Dec 31, 2012, the report, "Barometro Cisco de banda ancha 2.0" said.

Argentina, with a 7.5 percent penetration rate, is No. 2, followed by Brazil, with a 5.6 percent rate; and Colombia, with a 4.1 percent penetration rate.

The report, which was prepared by IDC Latinoamerica for networking equipment giant Cisco Systems, excluded Mexico, the region's other large Internet market, due to data collection difficulties.

Chile is the leader in 2.0 mobile broadband connections, with a 3G penetration rate of 8.3 percent, followed by Brazil, with a 3.4 percent penetration rate; Argentina, with a 3 percent penetration rate; and Colombia, which has a 2.6 percent penetration rate.

Chile is also No. 1 in average landline connection speed with 7.13 megabits per second (Mbps), followed by Brazil, with 4.68 Mbps; Argentina, with 2.29 Mbps; and Colombia, with 2.21 Mbps.
