Amritsar, Jan 10: A total of 114 live grenades were recovered from the premises of the Golden temple complex in Amritsar on Tuesday, police said.

The "rusted" ammunition was noticed by workers digging the area close to Hargobind Niwas near the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee guest house in the premises of the Golden Temple, Additional Director General of Police J P Birdi told PTI.

The ammunition was stacked in two sacks of cement and was around ten feet beneath the earth, Amritsar police chief R P S Brar said. Army bomb disposal squads and forensic experts have been called to check the grenades.

Birdi said the digging at the place had been stopped and the entire area has been cordoned off. He said preliminary investigations point that the live grenades were old and were dumped long time back.

However, sources said the ammunition might be dumped during the days of militancy in the state.
