Mangalore: Under the train and across: A way of life for Padil Kandevu residents

Mangalore, Jul 21: How does one cross a railway track to reach the other side? The easiest and the most common way would be to just walk across it. Well, it's not so easy for residents of Kandevu at Padil.

It is a daily struggle for these residents to reach the main road. Each time, they have to cross past, or even, under, a halted goods train to reach the road. Sometimes, it is really a tough thing to do as there are two trains parked.

The youth might be able to manage this, but school children, patients, and elderly citizens find it difficult. This problem started the day after Padil railway crossing junction was set up here.

It is not just the problem of five to ten families living in the area, but for residents of at least a hundred houses. It is hard to imagine the situation, but for the residents here, it is a part and parcel of life.

Sharing his problems, Manoj, a local, says that he has lived in the area since birth - for nearly 32 years.
“This is a major problem, not a recent one but dating back to almost 45 years ago. Leaders such as Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes, Krishna Palemar, Yogish Bhat and others have visited this place and promised us a solution, but to no avail,” he said.

“We have even brought this issue to the notice of the railway masters and officials, but even they seem helpless about our problem. A foot overbridge would be a better solution to our problems, but at least on a temporary basis, dividing train compartments at a particular point, so as to allow us to pass through freely would be a good idea,” he added.

Another resident, Sabitha, said that she has been in the locality for nearly seven years. “A goods train will be parked here almost daily, sometimes even two trains. All the residents here have to reach the main road by passing under the train. Children, sick people, senior citizens, and especially pregnant women face a lot of problem due to this. Last week, a man in the neighbourhood was suffering from some illness and he was unable to walk. He had to be admitted to a hospital immediately and we had to face a tough time getting him to the road from under the train,” she added.

“Getting our day-to-day needs like groceries is also an uphill task. Many leaders have visited the spot earlier, but we hope that the recent visit by MLA J R Lobo will surely get this problem solved,” she said.

“A temporary solution for the problem can be either parking the train a bit ahead or backward, or leaving a gap between goods compartments at a particular point. Movement of trains is not a problem, but the problem is due to the parking of trains daily. Foot overbridge appears to be the best solution. School children suffer a lot having to carry their heavy school bags, tiffin bags, umbrellas, and so on. Emergency situations are also something that we can’t cope up with,” she said sharing her pain.

Speaking on this issue, MLA Lobo said that he would contact union ministers Oscar Fernandes and Veerappa Moily and with their help, discuss the issue with central railway minister. "A meeting will also be held with Palakkad division officials. Efforts will be made to construct an overbridge at the spot," he said.

This scenario just shows how railways is neglecting Karnataka . I stay near the Mysore road. There are so many unmanned crossings which the railways say that there is no scope to convert it into either ROB or even RUB. This place is a very dangerous spot .I saw it when I visited Mangalore by Train .The trains which pass by this area accelerate heavily as it is up gradient. The ministry should take this up at the earliest. Palakkad Division will not do anything , they are all useless fellows. They are only hungry for power

My dear friends do you think anyone person who is a elected representative (Veerappa Moily, Oscar Fernandes, Krishna Palemar, Yogish Bhat) from the region is concerned to help the locals, once they become a minister or are in some board and can make some money we cannot get any help. The elected representatives in India are there to serve themselves not the citizens.

I used to live in Subhasnagar. These same trains start from Goods shed, Hoige Bazar. I did my primary schooling in Rosario school, and back then this used to be a daily affair for me. The train used to block the roads right during the peak hours when all the kids are rushing to school and in order to avoid being late we used to go under the trains. This was really irritating...and scary. With kids, its a different issue but we need to be considerate towards the aged at least.

When they plan, officials never fail to budget and keep provision for sky walk, underpass and level crossings. Finally when the work is complete we may see only few level crossings. Where the money evaporates is a question mark??????????

Our politicians are shameless people. All talk big but deliver a big ZERO. Karnataka government along with the our local MLA's have neglected the development of Mangalore. Our local MLA's are good for nothing. They visit all these places for photo shots, talk big, disappear the scene and forget everything.

Look at the photos and imagine the inconvenience caused to people in their everyday life. This issue easily could be solved by providing either a pedestrian over bridge or a underpass.

We are unfortunate that the Britishers left this country in the hands of our corrupt politicians otherwise our country would have developed as much as Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Canada ....

This place in the picture is just one and half kilometer from my house. It is junction for Mangalore-Bangalore and Mangalore to Mumbai (Konkan Railway route). It is really pathetic to see this. What is Written is Fact.

One more place is just above the Kulshekar Railway Tunnel of Konkan Railway Route, on which the city buses Route No. 4 State Bank to Kannagude, and 4D Mangaladvi to Kannagude are run. The bus route passes over the MUD road because Railways do not allow to ashpalt the same. Before the Railway Tunnel was done in the year 1964 onwards, there was nice and smooth MUD road. But now ever since the Railways constructed the tunnel it is night mare to drive on the road, such is the horrible condition of the mud road which is prevailing even now TODAY AND AS NOW and we the residents more 4000 people pass over it. Seeing is Believing. In the past, politicians both of the Central Govt and State Govt. did not make sincere attempts to solve this problem. Recently, Mr. J. R. Lobo visited the spot and assured that the matter would be taken up with the Palghat Division of Southern Railways. Hope Mr. J.R. Lobo address these two problems.

Mr. Prabhuji Bejai, do not comment sitting in the heart of the City of Mangalore, asking the Police to arrest the people who crossed the railway track. IT IS EASY TO SAY. You come to this place ONCE AND ONLY ONCE and you will never come to this place again.

Why do not you ask the Police TO ARREST the concerned Officials of the Railways and Politicians who are responsible for this MESS?

If the people in the area have to catch the city buses Route No.4 and 4D, as i mentioned in my comments, it is minimum one and half kilometer having steep gradient and you can see the steep steps which the people, specially the elders to climb(See the PIc No.9 and Pic No 10). It is more convenient to cross the track and come to the Kodakal- Padil - Mangalore Road of National Highway No 75, Mangalore-Bangalore Highway which is not steep but plain road. Do not be ARM CHAIR CRITIC AND COMMENTATOR but you understand people's problem. If there is proper infrastructure, these things would not have happen. JAI HIND, JAI KARNATAKA.

It is such a bad situation to walk under a train. All this mess is becuase Mangalore not being part of Konkan railway. there should be skywalks instead of this dangerous crossing. Railway officials are not bothered about safety of the people. All this will automatically if Mangalore is included into Konkan railway. even the facilities in central and accessibility of Kankandy stations will improve. hope this falls on Kharge's ears and plans to include Mangalore in Konkan Railway.
