Hubli, Jan 31: Brushing aside speculation, South Western Railway general manager Trilok Nath Perti on Friday January 27,categorically stated that a new railway line between Hassan and Shravanabelagola is ready and it will be opened to passenger traffic before Wednesday February 8.
In an exclusive interview to Deccan Herald, he said the Commissioner of Railway Safety had already inspected the new route and had given the green signal for opening it to passenger traffic much before the world famous Mahamastakabhisheka of Lord Bahubali at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district.
The trial run was successful. Nobody should have any doubt regarding the commitment of railways in rising to the occasion of Mahamastakabhisheka, held once in 12 years. Preparations are in final stages and are expected to be completed before January 31.
Mr Perti said as per the State government’s plea, SWR will run three pairs of shuttle train services between Hassan and Shravanabelagola from February 8 to 23, apart from regular train services. The construction of Shravanabelagola Railway Station was already completed and there will be three platforms for movement of special and regular trains to and from the pilgrim centre.
The entry points to railway stations had been widened for the sake of passengers with steps on one side and ramp on the other side. Railways had made arrangements for drinking water and toilets in the station. The State government had been requested to ensure adequate water at the station for maintenance of trains.
Reservation system
Temporary Passenger Reservation System had been made at Shravanabelagola Railway Station, besides deputing as many as 150 additional staff there for helping passengers in booking tickets.
Internet connection had already been taken for issuing tickets to any destination. Both the operative and commercial officers have been asked to be present from February 8 to 23 for smooth functioning of trains. If needed, railways will operate special trains from Bangalore, Mysore and Hubli to Shravanabelagola.
The GM said so far SWR had not received any requisition from anybody for hiring the entire train to Shravanabelagola and they would consider it if such a request is made.
The medical team of SWR will be stationed at Shravanabelagola with railway doctors and para-medical staff to attend to all emergency cases on all the days. Railways was ready to operate night trains from Mysore for the sake of devotees who come from all over the country. According to government estimate, around 20 lakh people are expected to participate in Mahamastakabhisheka.
