Mangalore, Feb 4: They came asking for an address but went away loaded with gold!

This happened here in the city in the house of Alwyn D’Cunha, a resident of Mercara Hills near St Agnes College, Bendore.

This incident of daylight theft is a warning bell for those of us who carelessly entertain any visitor at the door without the slightest hint that he/she may sweep your treasury clean.

A couple who identified themselves as Jonathan and Julie accompanied by three children knocked at the door of the D’Cunha house on Feb 2 around 12.30 pm.

The visitor family explained to the D’Cunha family that they were in search of a certain Mascarenhas from Goa. As their child was hungry and the woman needed to nurse it, they requested them to provide them some space in a room for a few minutes. The D’Cunha family obliged and provided them with one of the rooms.

All seemed well as the family left the house in an hour’s time. And lo! the cupboards had been swept clean, which the D’Cunha family realized only the next morning.

The visitor family had lifted gold and other valuables worth Rs 1.87 lac.

There is also an impression around that since it was unlikely that the house-owners could have been so easily conned into the whole episode, the visitors might have used some hypnotic method to trick them.

A case has been filed at the Kadri police station.
