Mangalore, Feb 21: With the commissioning of the multi-purpose general cargo berth that can accommodate vessels upto 90,000 DWT, the total handling capacity of the new Mangalore port has increased by three million tonnes per annum.

The berth, built at the cost of Rs 40.82 crore with a draft of 14m and 350 m in length, could accommodate vessels up to 90,000 DWT, which was almost three times the parcel size of ships handling other general cargo berths, an NMPT release here said today.

M V Ocean Paradise, with a draft of 11.80 m, was the first vessel to berth at the new facility to load 46,000 MT of iron orefines to China.

The deep draft berth would be beneficial for importers, exporters and other user agencies for handling iron ore, coal, fertilisers and other bulk cargo, the release added.
