Mangalore, Feb 24: Inspector Vinay Gaonkar of Bunder police station has been appointed head of the District Anti Rowdy Squad.

The police sources said that the government has given permission to start District Anti Rowdy Squad.  It will come into to effect shortly.  Till then Vinay Gaonkar will also continue to be the inspector of Bunder police station, said the sources.

The government has decided revamp the present Anti Rowdy Squad completely.  The funds needed for the separate staff, vehicles and other facilities will be allotted in the coming state budget.

Though Anti Rowdy Squad was functioning in the district, it was not a separate independent unit.  But with the increase in the underworld activities in the district, it has now been decided to revamp the squad and invest it with more freedom and new staff.  Bunder station sub inspector P A Hegde who was heading the Anti Rowdy Squad so far has been promoted and transferred after the encounter of David alias Shaji in the last month.

Inspector Vinay Gaonkar is known to be a tough and disciplined cop.  He had even headed the Anti Rowdy Squad in its early days.  Now with new structure and staff, a lot more is expected from him both by the public as well as the police department.
