US senator stabbed by son

Washington, Nov 20 (IANS): A US senator was stabbed by his son who later committed suicide by shooting himself in the politician's home, Sky News reported Wednesday.

Virginia state Senator Creigh Deeds was stabbed by his 24-year-old son Gus in what police said appeared to be an attempted murder and suicide.

After being stabbed, the democratic senator managed to walk from his home to a road where a cousin driving by spotted him, Virginia police spokesperson Corinne Geller said.

Police later found the body of his son, Gus Deeds, with a gunshot wound.

Geller said investigators were still trying to figure out a motive for the attack and the sequence of events.

"It's a very complex investigation," she said.

She added that police spoke to the senator but would not reveal what he said.

Gus Deeds, one of the senator's four adult children, had reportedly been evaluated for a mental health issue earlier this week.
