Udupi Apr 26: The Congress party plans to start a campaign to increase membership registration keeping in view the upcoming election for teachers and graduates’ constituencies, said Union Minister Oscar Fernandes while addressing party workers meet here in Brahmagiri on Tuesday April 26.

He said that the UPA government will extend the Employment Guarantee Scheme, presently in 200 districts, to all the districts in the country. Midday meals will be provided to 16 crore students so that poverty does not deprive them of education, he said.

Referring to the Brahmavar sugar factory issue, he promised that he will try to ensure that the central government repays the pending amount to the farmers.

Fernandes also inaugurated the founder’s day celebrations of Nitte Education Trust here on April Tuesday April 25. Speaking on the occasion, he stressed the need to bring in innovative and quality changes in the education sector.
 
The late Justice K S Hegde and Dr TMA Pai were visionaries who laid the foundation for quality education in the district. The onus of carrying forward their work is now on the shoulders of present generation leaders like Vinay Hegde, chairman, Nitte Education Trust, he said.
