Udupi, Jun 25: Udupi will soon make its mark in the world map for wind power. While thermal power station at Nandikur was in controversy, Medical Education Minister and in-charge minister for Udupi V S Acharya announced on Saturday, Jun 24, that a windmill manufacturing plant will come up in the district.
Speaking to press persons here Acharya said that a multi-national company Suzlon would set up the unit in the Energy Special Economic Zone at Nandikur here at a cost of Rs 4,000 crore.
A total of 800 acres of land earmarked for the National Thermal Power Corporation and Cogentrics will be used for the plant. The government has approved this plan and the plant is expected to come up before Jan 2007, he added.
The windmill manufacturing plant is a zero-effluent and zero-pollution unit and the initial investment would be Rs 1,000 crore. This project would generate employment for 5,000 youth in the district, Acharya informed.
A task force has been formed which will meet shortly to discuss on the setting up of the plant. The first unit of the plant would be commissioned by January 2007.
