EC rejects BJP's charge of bias, says not afraid of anyone

New Delhi, May 8 (PTI): Unfazed by BJP's all-out attack, the Election Commission today rejected its accusations of bias in denying permission to Narendra Modi's rally in Varanasi and made it clear that it was "not afraid of anyone, any political party or any entity" in doing its job.

At a hurriedly-called press conference here, Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath strongly defended the action of Varanasi Returning Officer Pranjal Yadav, saying his decision was based on "professional advice" and ruled out his removal as demanded by the BJP.

Flanked by other two Election Commissioners, Sampath expressed disappointment over BJP's attack, saying "certain harsh and sweeping statements" were made and political parties to "show greater maturity".

Sampath said the Returning Office, who is the District Magistrate of Varanasi, had denied permission to the rally proposed to be held today on the "basis of professional advice" and there was no need for the EC to "deviate" from it.

"When the security and suitability issues are involved, the Election Commission naturally will go by the professional advice taken at the district level," the CEC said responding to attacks by BJP which staged protests here and in Varanasi.

"The competent local authority, the DM and his team, took the decision taking into consideration relevant professional advice on security," he said.

"There is no reason to deviate from the decision taken at the district level, specially when the issue of life and security are concerned," Sampath said.

Effectively rejecting BJP's demand for removal of the DM who was accused of being partisan, he said, "as of today, we do not find the action faultworthy".

He asserted that the Commission is "not afraid of anyone, any political party or any entity in discharging its duties".

EC is biased to the hilt against the BJP. Its for all to see. Very surprising that the EC is still loyal to the sinking congress which is proved beyond all doubts. It remains to be seen as to what plum positions they will get if ( god forbid) congress comes to power which they are trying hard by resorting to all possible unfair means

We know how impartial EC is.
In 2009 Chidambaram had lost by 3000 votes and all the news channels reported accordingly. But later on the result was changed in favour of Chidmbaram. All those concerned EC officials later on got lucrative posts.
Since such manipulation is not possible this time as Jayalalitha is very vigilant this time, Chidu has fielded his son in the same constituency and he himself is trying to go to Rajya Sabha from Karnataka !

Maybe he needs to clarify what "professional advice" he received ? Modi has conducted more rallies across India than all other politicians combined. No politician in the history has traveled 3 lakh kms in 7 months. And now he is barred from a rally in a constituency where he is contesting ? Maybe the "professional advice" was given by Madamji and Mullayamji.

Btw, isn't this the same VS Sampath who was a part of the multi-billion coal scam ? No wonder he is protecting his masters.

No politician received such a corporate background. If someone sponsors me and you like people also can conduct such rallies.

If (and only if)he becomes PM how he returns to them you will come to know in the first budget.

No Haris Bhai, I think even if someone sponsors, most of the commentators are arm chair critics and cannot hold such a rally. Even if you somehow did, you will not see even a single person in the audience. Nothing personal, but it is the fact :)

Yes unless some innocent muslims are slaughtered and then somehow get a clean s%*t by burying all evidence one will not get the audience and popularity. Nothing personal here, it is the truth as we see it unfolding before our eyes.
