Mangalore, Jun 28: The inaugural Derik Chess School (DCS) weekend tournament was held on Sunday June 25 in the DCS premises. The tournament consisted of 2 categories, namely, round-robin event comprising 9 players including invited senior players of the district and upcoming talents; and Swiss events exclusively for kids.
The round robin rapid event 'DCS Premier League' was won by top seeded Vikram Saralaya of Udupi with 8/8 score. Veteran Gopalakrishna of Sullia scored 6.5 points to bag the second place. Madhusoodan Bhat of Customs and Prakash V Rao of Canara College were tied with 5 points each and were placed third and fourth respectively as Bhat had scored against Prakash Rao in the league.
In the 'Weekend Swiss League' 7-year old Anantharam R U of Sharada Vidyalaya sprang a surprise results to score 5 points in as many rounds to bag the title. Another young prodigy Shabdik Varma of SDM, Ujire had to battle it out against Vanessa D'Souza in a tiebreaker to clinch the runner-up title with 4 points. Vanessa D'Souza was placed third.
Special prizes were awarded to Andrea D'Souza of St Agnes Primary School for best under-11 player, Vighneshwaran of Kendriya Vidyalaya for best under-9 player and Allama S Nandi of Presidency School for best under-7 player.
