Seat belt could have prevented Munde's death, says Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi, June 4 (IANS): Senior BJP leader and union minister Gopinath Munde's death could have been prevented had he worn his car seat belt while travelling, said Health Minister Harsh Vardhan Wednesday.

Munde, a senior minister who looked after three portfolios, including rural development, died after an early morning road accident in Delhi Tuesday.

"I lost my friend to a misconception. Most people think the seat belts on the back seat serve only a decorative purpose. In fact, wearing them is as necessary as wearing front seat belts. They can save lives in the event of impacts," Harsh Vardhan said here before leaving for Munde's funeral in Maharashtra.

The health minister said that though the damage to Munde's car was not significant, the force with which he was thrown forward within the confined space of the vehicle damaged a joint in his neck and severely injured the spinal cord.

"The blood vessels carrying blood supply to the brain stem (which is the seat of respiratory and cardiac centre) got disrupted and this became a cause for immediate cardiac and respiratory arrest. Besides, the liver was ruptured which caused profuse loss of blood," he said, according to an official release.

"I feel numbed by the realization that the nation has lost such a valuable mass leader and an able minister with a proven track record in Maharashtra. I now realize the trauma of countless others whose near ones die in car crashes only because they had overlooked the importance of the seat belt," he said.

Harsh Vardhan said the health ministry will soon take the initiative to make people aware of safety protocols while driving.

"A multi-media campaign in collaboration with NGOs working on safety is being considered," the health minister said, adding that the focus would be on the child victims of accidents.

The minister felt there should also be a degree of coercion in making people wear seat belts.

"I would seek the cooperation of the associations of petroleum dealers all over the country to utilise the pumps as points of interface with car and bike users. Perhaps a system could be developed under which petrol and diesel sales can be denied to those who don't use seat belts and helmets," he said.

"Let us regard the Gopinath Munde tragedy as a turning point," he said.

may his soul rest in peace...

God made man but man cant even make good roads and follow road rules?follow STOP signs, who is to be blamed?
    what a irony?
    are we so backward?lethargic.. clumsy.?
yes , we are..no point in blaming others but we individuly take responsibility and make things happen ..we need to change out attitude..collectively w ecan change the world..
If USA..EUROPE...JAPAN can have good road sa nd road ethics..regulations ..ex: speed .STOP signals..
    etc.
and we follow then what can on expect?
If , everyone pay taxes and not stack money overseas in personal wealth instead build State of art Infrastructure ..mega cities s..best roads ..
POLICE should have academies in every city and be trained by the MILITARY ....
    no belly...
clean uniforms... well equipped with all electronic gadgets ..vehicles etc.
to be on top of the rules....continued education etc.
Police should be prompt..sharp..crisp....punctual..and command respect..they should be ed ..trained an inducted..well paid ..no room for HAFTHA and Bribe s..at all.
thus not breaking the law to make both ends meet...
if needed the top cops should be trained i USA /EUROPE/JAPAN/ISRAEL...

Dont make fun of it Mr.Jossy. Yes seat belts save life.Mr. Harsha vardhan is 100% Right. i am working with a reputed Australian MNC firm pst 7 years. from the enarmous training we get from this firm safety department, a lot of importance given to wearing seat belt while moving in vehicle. As indians our safety culture is very poor . why still we are considered as a developping country?. Be Positive Mr. Jossy. don't talk silly.

Earlier our Ex president B.D.Jatti lost his beloved son in a TWO wheeler accident. Immediate after govt enforced strict law for wearing HELMET. Rule is quite appreciable and safe for public life. Now the Yesterday’s incident of a leading politician will also impact on safety rule and may present govt will announce strict rule to wear seat belt for four while passengers. Hope it will benefit to all.
Overall our law and order is respecting only on minister and politicians. N no respect or value for normal citizen is totally a unfortunate.

Denying Petrol to those who do not wear Seat Belt in the Car is alright, but denying petrol to those who do not wear HELMET can not be implemented in Mangalore, because in Mangalore every day Helmet thefts take place in the Parking lots of Malls like Big Bazar. Last Saturday I went to Big Bazar in Bejai on my bike wearing New Helmet and there in the parking lot within five minutes my new Helmet was stolen as I had not chained to the carrier and the Security man admitted that every day helmets are stolen in their parking lot and they are helpless as the management is not installing CC camera.

Wearing a seat belt is a must. It is provided to minimize the injuries in case of a collision. Yes, we will all have to go one day. But trying to get ahead in the queue unnecessarily is stupid. Every day I see two wheel riders wearing their helmets around their arms or just placing them on their head without fastening the straps. Are we trying to fool the cops or ourselves? In India we don't seem to take the safety issue seriously. When there is a causality we will blame everyone but ourselves.

Instead of finding fault with the seat belt, it is better to find out why he travelled without security being union minister !!!!!!
