Daijiworld News Network - Mangalore

Mangalore /Sullia, July 13: The plight of the people of Doddery, belonging to the Odabai community, who have been using a raft over several years to cross the Payaswini River at Odabai to and from Sullia was pathetic. But thanks to small mercies the dangerous voyage on a raft has been replaced by an easy walk over a hanging bridge.

Newly built bridge

Rotary Club and Infosys have jointly constructed a hanging bridge over the Payaswini River, which was inaugurated in the first week of July 2006.

The local Rotary Club knew that everyday the people had to risk their lives and take the journey which was fraught with insecurity each moment.  But how did Infosys pitch in with timely help to complete the handing bridge?

Before: Hazardous mode of transport

It was the exclusive feature on Daijiworld ‘Odabai Community Hangs Between Waters and Deep Blue Sky’ by our correspondent Viju Mangalore that made the magic. The company which believes in helping people in a silent manner, realized the need of the people through this news story published on Daijiworld.

Sources from Infosys have revealed that Infosys Foundation contributed a sum of Rs 10 lac for the bridge

We at Daijiworld are glad to have facilitated such a philanthropic effort by Infosys. The bridge indeed is a boon to over 500 houses and especially to the children of the locality.

The project became a reality with help from Dr Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda (Rs 1 lac), Dr D Veerendra Heggade of Dharmasthala (Rs 25,000), Ajjavar gram panchayat (Rs 23,000), Kantamangala Rotary Community Corps (Rs 10,000) and several other donors.

With Infosys joining in, the gap was bridged.

The inauguration of the bridge was attended by Naren Koduvattat, one of the vice presidents of Infosys Technologies Ltd,  Dr Kurunji Venkataramana Gowda, founder-president of Academy of Liberal Education, Sullia, Mangalore MP D V Sadananda Gowda, Dr Prabhakar Shishila and other office-bearers of Rotary Club, besides the brain behind the hanging bridge, engineer Girish Bharadwaj.
