Rail passenger fare hiked by 14.2 percent

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI): In an unpopular decision, railway passenger fare was today increased by 14.2 percent in all classes while freight charge was hiked by 6.5 percent with effect from today.

The decision of the Railways today restores an announcement of May 16, the day Lok Sabha election results came, when the same hike was effected but immediately put on hold.

The Railways had then issued a notification effecting hike in passenger fare by 14.2 percent across the board and freight charges by 6.5 percent from May 20. This was followed up with an official press release.

The May 16 fare hike decision, which had raised eyebrows as it came in the midst of Lok Sabha election results, led to a scurry of activities in Rail Bhawan on that day and the Railway Board went into a huddle to discuss its fallout.

Soon after, the red-faced Railway Ministry had put the decision on hold, saying the matter related to the revision will be left to the next government.

The then Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge came out with a statement directing the Board to leave the decision on the hike to the new government.

"It is now informed that under the directions of the Minister of Railways Mallikarjun Kharge, the decision on the proposed hike in the freight charges and passenger fares have been kept pended till further advice for placing this proposal before the new government," the statement said.

A fresh notification was issued later, stating that the "revision of fares with effect from May 20 should be pended till further advice."

Empty rhetoric and name calling does not bring solutions. People need to table their ideas to plug the Rs.24,600 crore loss Indian Railways finds itself in. Either increase the price and reduce the deficit or start shutting down service. Damned if you do, and damned if you don't situation.

Ex : Ever the socialists, the CPI and later TMC governments in Kolkata refused the raise the bus fare prices. Soon most private bus owners stopped running their buses. Today there is no meaningful mass public transport system in Kolkata. You have to pay for rickshaws or taxis. Populist policies and economics do not mix.

Hike in fares is inevitable whether our country is ruled by BJP or Congress. The question here is, would BJP have kept quiet if Congress hiked the fares? We all know what drama they and other parties did when gas price was hiked by Congress sometime back. They did not hesitate to go for Bharat bundh thus causing loss of billions of Rupees to the government exchequer. Are they ready to face if the Opposition Party takes such step now? It is easy for any opposition parties to instigate people for their selfish motives. Now that BJP is ruling the country, can they do what they did not want Congress to do? It is just the beginning. Aage aage dekho, hota hai kya.

By blaming the previous govt for the wrong policies & by promising good governance NDA has come to power. Now if NDA is implementing the policies & projects of the previous govt. what vision of “acche din” NDA has for the nation? “Acche Din” for NDA ministers & servants, because without working on their own, they are blindly taking/copying the decisions or projects meticulously prepared by the previous govt. They were prepared by keeping in mind the good of the people. If they are bad why then NDA is implementing them? This shows that whatever UPA did was right & NDA is continuing those right policies now. But in spite of this obvious thing, the supporters of NDA, blame the previous govt. & appreciate NDA when it copies blindly. What foolish contradictions!!!

Gujarat CM sends letter to PM against railway freight fare hike, fourth letter in two week

“Withdraw immediately 20% hike in Railway freight fare imposed on public just before Railway Budget”: Narendra Modi asks Dr Singh

Gandhinagar, Wednesday: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has in a letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today expressed his strong indignation at the Centre’s sudden decision to hike the Railways freight fare by a whopping 20 per cent through backdoor, just a week before the Railway Budget, diminishing the supremacy of the Parliament

Mr. Modi demanded immediate withdrawal of the unnerving hike, as it would cause an unprecedented burden on the common man and indirectly on the nation’s economy.

“Was the Central Government waiting for the results of the elections to five State Assemblies to impose an anti-people and anti-farmer policy?” he pointedly asked Dr. Singh.

He described the hike highly unjustified since the prices of a number of commodities, are already ruling at a much higher level than people’s tolerance limits. The freight rationalization would entail a jerk of Rs350 per tonne on food grains and fertilizers. The decision also reflects huge communication gap between the Ministries of Railway, Energy, Coal and Environment. This is despite the Prime Minister’s constituting a high-level committee for coordination.

Mr. Modi said that Gujarat will be most hit on the coal front, because the coalfields are far away. He said that rise in railway freight fare since 2006 has caused an additional burden of Rs.19,000-crore on Gujarat, on just one commodity. The latest hike would coast another Rs.300-crore on power generation.

The Chief Minister recalled that he had in a letter sent to the Prime Minister on February 11, 2008 pointed out that Gujarat got only nine lakh tonnes of coal through coal linkages from Western Coalfields, and the rest from farther away Southeastern Coalfields of inferior quality at higher prices, as against an annual requirement of 174-lakh tonnes. Instead of solving the problem all these year, he regretted, the Centre has been increasing the coal and prices as well as railway freight.

This is called development and good governance.
Congress never did this hike and that too by 14% since they had opposition both within and outside the alliance for hiking prices. but what now there is no opposition, So in the name of development he can do whatever he wants.
Had congress done this hike , it would have been inflation, but since BJP is doing it its called development.

People who are complaining should take pain to explain how else to cover the deficit ? The current fiscal deficit is 4.5 % of the GDP thanks to the massive mismanagement and vote bank policies of UPA 1 and 2. Without reducing the deficit and balancing the budget, the country and its currency will continue to be under pressure.

The first year for the new government will be tough. Massive expenditure is required in clearing the bottleneck in infrastructure projects, defense purchases and creating an environment for investment. There is no way to achieve this without higher taxation. UPA has put the country 20 years behind. The medicine to fix it will be bitter.

I can understand the price hike due to various circumstances (Oil\diesel\labour\repair cost\maintenance cost\salary hikes\Minister's and railway officials pocket money (in crores)
All these and many more things caused the Railways to hike the prices and I do not blame BJP\Modi\railway minister for this at all.
Only UPA was to be blamed when they raised the prices\hiked the tariff for travel etc. as they were doing it purposely, to torture the middle and poorer class people. There was big hue and cry from BJP\Modi.
When UPA managed so well to curb\keep a check on the inflation of essential commodities when there was severe SHORTAGE of various items especially onions, BJP\Modi government is finding it difficult to keep check on onion prices even in spite of bumper onion crop this year!!!!
If this is the way Modi shouted hoarse of controlling inflation to the minimum - then I will leave it to the BJPIans who voted and those others who fell for this and voted.

I hope Modi will do something to keep his promises and treat his throat which became hoarse shouting all these things for us to believe earlier.
Is he, by any chance, avoiding all these situations by travelling abroad!!!?

We dislike solutions. Our Interest is only in problems, to blame and waste time in arguments.
A concept change can save a considerable volume of fuel, eliminate air pollution and sound pollution, reduce transport cost drastically and meet the increasing transport demand of rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods.
The huge dead weight of commuters and goods on wheels can be considered as a source of energy by using it as a powerful pushing force. The burden with severe problems can be converted as an excellent boon of solutions.
If we have a budget/provision for R&D, we can have a rapid revolution in the surface transport sector to make a world of difference.

But then due to the elections & the imminent collapse, Sonia & ManMoun did not want more heartburn, hence the duo defferred this decision until 16th May the day of results...Price rise planned, drawn out & Made by UPA 2, but curses will now be on Modi Sarkaar!!!

Though it is unfavorable news, it was inevitable for the Railways to stop the monthly loss of Rs 900 Crores.

This fare hike was proposed by Railway Board in Apr-May to then Railway Minister Mr. Kharge. Considering elections in Mind, Kharge had put it on hold.

New Govt is planning innovations, safety, speed, service in the railways. We are ready to pay the the increased price if we are getting good service. Railway Minister DVS is planning to start bullet trains soon between Mumbai and Delhi. Considering all these fare hike is justified.

Dear Dinesh Poojary, you are absolutely right. Coalition politics has played hevoc with railway finances. It is strange that public never object when Private Bus Operator rob them when they increase fair once in 3 months and charge 200% during Sunday,Saturday and other holidays. There is huge difference between Bus and Railway fairs which is to be minimized. Railways should provide good services and additional trains and make railway popular mode of transport for public.

Ache Din Aa Gaye... If the same hike was done by UPA government, it would have been termed as Corruption and Poor Governance. Now when it is done by BJP government, it is TOUGH DECISION. Very Funny. It seems, the new Government has no special magic wand as propagated during their election campaigns and is simply following the lines of previous government.
