After rail fare, Modi regime to push for LPG price hike

New Delhi, Jun 23 (DHNS) : Domestic LPG price may see a hike of Rs 10 per cylinder if the government decides to accept “strong” recommendations made by the Petroleum Ministry to offset the rising fuel subsidy burden.

The news is equally bad for piped cooking gas consumers. A decision on increasing the price of natural gas is expected as early as this week.

Discussions are at an advanced stage with Prime Minister Narendra Modi accelerating the pace of meetings with oil and finance ministers.

Every dollar increase in gas price may lead to Rs 1.89 per standard cubic metre hike in piped cooking gas price.

If the government accepts to bite the bullet, this will be its second major step after the increase in the railway fare and freight charges and may trigger a chain reaction as it may push prices of food, power and fertiliser, among others.

At present, the government incurs a loss of Rs 433 on a domestic subsidised cylinder meant for household kitchen. The Rs 10 hike will save it Rs 7,000 crore on fuel subsidy bill.

“Iraq crisis has posed a fresh challenge to the new government and there may not be any other way out than increasing prices of fuels,” an official told Deccan Herald.

As the oil price is shooting upward, price increase of everything would be the daily news. Those people who blindly trusted that one person
"Mr. Modi" can bring prosperity to India overnight would be faced with many questions now. Please understand that world-wide events will directly affect the Indian economy. Mr. Modi, even with his good intentions can't create any miracle because he is an "human being". Besides, ruling one prosperous state "Gujarat" and ruling 1.2 billion people of India with poverty all over the nation is totally a different political game plan.

UPA Govt was pro-poor and pro-development. But due to coalition politics and non-cooperation from the opposition parties they could not perform well in some fronts. However, when the whole world was going through recession Indian economy survived. The credit should go to the Congress led UPA for this. BJP has a very big majority but its performance so far is far from satisfactory. Basically BJP is not the party of the poor and the lower class people. They are always pro-rich as they receive billions of funds from top industrialists and business houses. Money & Media power has helped BJP to win the election. Out of the total electorate 64% voted and BJP got 31%. That means effectively BJP got around 20% of the total electorate. Anyway let us wish them all the best. Long live our democratic and secular India.

    Dear Readers

Please understand that railways makes a loss of Rs. 30 crore everyday, 900 crores a month a a whopping 10,000 crores in a year. Why should the government subsidise rail travel? A sleeper class travel from Mangalore to Trivandrum will cost less than 1 Rupees per Kilometer. Yet people complain. Previous government has been giving Subsidy after Subsidy for all people even if they were in a position to spend. Look at Food security bill. It covers 80 % of the population and yet government figures say only about 25 % of the people are below poverty line.
The final result of all these Sops are a negative fiscal defeciet and a falling Rupee which will take inflation still higher.
Rising railway fare was long overdue. It is time we modernise our railways. Where will the money come if the government is already running a loss of 10 k crore in a year? Everyone wants new trains, bullet trains, good railway stations etc but nobody is willing to pay for it??
Lets hope that with the hike comes good quality and good service in Indian Railways.Hope to have new railway lines and faster trains in the future.
If such a step was not taken the day was not far when Indian Railways would have followed Air India. Hope some strict measures are taken for Air India also.
Have some faith in the new government. It is not a sleeping governement like the previous one. You will find all the ministers very active on Social media including the PM himself. Lets wait for the budget and see the plans of the new government. Just dont critisize for the sake of it. Lets see what they will do with the additional revenue they get with this hike and then judge them.

This has happended in past when V P Singh reined in NF Govt & Chandrashekar led Govt were forced to increase rail fares & pledge gold etc...Its only a matter of time, its still honey moon period for Modi, dont be so harsh & let out your venom on NDA....Good times are coming

Modi promised 'Ache Din' and not 'Susthe Din'. Bitter pills are absolutely necessary to put our sick economy back in to track. When people to to multiplex, they will not bother Rs 150/-, but they will think about Rs.10/- while paying for gas cylinder for which govt give subsidy of about Rs.600/-. India should popularize indigenous non conventional energy instead of imported petro product. Then only our economy can survive.

I wonder what the 'chai pe charcha' women have to say to this.
Gas price hike is OK - prices are not constant.
Railfare hike is OK - it was formulated by UPA
Hindi imposition is OK - isn't it national language
Non-prioritization of election time issues is OK - there are next 5 years of governance
Communal Fanatical disturbances is OK - after all don't they have feelings?

I am happy, actually all issues have become non-issues. It is how one wants to project it. Pre-Modi it had marketing projection, now it is implementation challenges.

Atleast 25%of the population does not want lpg subsidy. This subsidy is leading to inefficient use and agents.Anyone filing returns of above 5 lakhs, nris and anyone having FDs above Rs 25 lakhs should be excluded. Max use should be restricted to 6 cylinders on subsidised basis. Open the market and see what happens to these PSUs and arrogant dealers. Does anyone want subsidy for telephone bill?..see the fate of bsnl. Successive governments have made us beggars and lazy in the name of reservations and subsidy. Indians want jobs and growth..Well done government. Cheers.

    1. Most people in Karnataka depend on buses and not railways, why we should pay more taxes to subsidise the free rail travel by people in UP/Bihar ? If rail price increase can bring some revenue to provide a good train connectivity between bangalore and managlore we must welcome it, DVS must be given atleast two years and then can be blamed.

I think it is not correctly reported here. As told on tv and what I read, it is not Rs 10 one time increase, but government is thinking 10 Rupee increase every month on a consecutive basis. This is in addition to my season ticket fare going from Rs 1000 to 3000.

Sh Nawaz, these are corrections that are getting applied to stabilize the economy. This price crise would only be for a short period. We all know in what state the country's coffers were left by the UPA - ZERO! this needs to be brought to stability. BTW, 31% of the voted population brought BJP 282 seats, in parliamentary democracy its the 1st past the post system. Please do not tom tom on the rest 59% not voting for the majority party....Remember this

Juliet, what do you think? If all this money has not been siphoned off, the economy would have been stronger, the govt. would have been in a better position to continue the subsidies on LPG.

Now wait for some time, let Modi and his honest team reverse the wrong doings of UPA and bring the economy back to line. Subsidies will be provided for evryone. For you too, inspite of your anti-BJP comments!
