Mangalore, Aug 8: Residents at Kottara Chowki are suffering from the inefficient drainage system that has been flowing directly in front of their homes. The residents blame the local authorities for their failure to take measures regarding this inconvenience.
Alwyn Pais, a resident of Kottara Cross third lane said, "The dirty pungent contents flow out on to the path that the children take while going to the school nearby. The vehicles commuting on the road often splash the filthy water on to the children and their accompanying parents without any consideration. All of us who live here are very concerned about the diseases that this soiled water could spread. It is also dangerous...if you accidentally slip, your leg may directly go into the drain."
The problem has been going on for the past two to three years and gets significantly worse during the monsoon season. It makes the road inaccessible. The citizens who live here have repeatedly reported the problem to the area corporator but they are yet to see the authorities paying any attention to their complaints, let alone, fixing the problem.
As a result the crisis has steadily deteriorated and today the entire area has a fetid smell that deters the hardiest of pedestrians from approaching the area. Repeated complaints have gone unheeded and it is now unbearable for the people who live here.
The inhabitants of Kottara Cross feel that the authorities should not neglect this problem anymore. They should work to improve the efficacy of the drainage as well expand it to sustain a larger volume of water. This would be the ideal solution to all their problems.
Speaking to Daijiworld, corporator Rajanesh said, "This problem has come up due to the Reliance cable that passes through the drainage manhole. The issue has since been brought to the notice of the company and they have agreed to remove the cable. The technical glitch needs to be addressed from the Kottara Chowki first cross in order to do it properly. Consistent heavy rain has been hampering our efforts. As soon as the weather clears we will finish the work at the first cross road drainage and eventually we will repair the third cross drainage system."
