Shankaracharya Vs Sai Baba: Clashes erupt at Dharma Sansad in Kawadha

Raipur, Aug 26 (Agencies) : The ongoing spat between Shirdi Sai Baba devotees and Shankaracharya Swaroopanand Saraswati turned uglier on Monday when a scuffle broke out between their followers during a “Dharma Sansad” (Religious Parliament) organised at Kawardha in Chhattisgarh.

As per reports, the scuffle began when two Sai devotees, who had come to put forth their views on the holiness of Shirdi Sai baba, questioned Shankaracharya which irked his devotees.

The furious Shankaracharya supporters also pushed the Sai devotees down the stage.

Later, Shankarachrya himself had to intervene to ease off the situation and the police had to deploy extra force to prevent any untoward incident.

Around 400 religious leaders had come to attend the two-day long Dharma Sansad, which began here on Sunday.

The congregation which includes Shankaracharya Swami Swaroopanand Saraswati and representatives of 13 ‘Akharas’ and other religious leaders discussed whether the status of 'Saint' to be given to Shirdi Sai Baba or not on the first day.

Meanwhile, the Dharma Sansad today passed a resolution that Sai Baba, the 19th century saint from Shirdi, should not be worshipped as a deity by the followers of 'Sanatan Dharma'.

Swaroopananda Saraswati has argued that Shiridi Saibaba cannot be accepted as god in Hinduism. The Dwarka seer has argued that the Hindu scriptures have accepted Shiv, Shakti, Vishnu, Ganesh and Surya and their respective reincarnations as Gods.

The Gods accepted by ‘sanatan dharma’ (Hinduism) have found mention in various religious scriptures pertaining to the religion, and Saibaba does not fall in either of the category.

The Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi had already decided not to send the representative at Dharam Sansad after they were invited by the Shankarachrya.

God is one and is worshipped in different ways by different faiths. But Shankaracharya should not dictate what to workship and what not to because afterall he is God to decide that. If he does not want, let him not worship Shirdi Saibaba because there millions of people around the world who worship Saibaba and it will hurt them

your above said comments makes sense except Jesus Christ. We Christians worship only Jesus Christ not any saints even Mother Mary but we pray with them so that they can pray for us with God the father.
Hence a true christian will worship/adore God the father and follow the footpath of saints, so that we can reach near God.

There is no end to this debate on religion, is like what is first - egg or hen. Whatever it is, it's God's creation for nothing comes out of nothing, there is a creator who we call God. Instead of debating and hurting someones feelings, we should pray, O God reveal to me who You are so that I may know You personally and accept you as my God and serve YOU and my neighbor also your creation.

    Brother Lawrence, mumbai.

Thats the reason God has sent prophets from time to time to teach human beings who God is n why n how we should worship him. The first man on earth..Adam (as called in bible) Aadam (as called in Quran) n Manu (as called in hindu scriptures) was a messenger n who gave teachings to human beings.. from time to time God sent his messengers...like many but few to b mentioned here....adam, krishna, buddha, noah, lot, moses, isac, david, solomon, jesus, mary, mohammad....along with the messengers God revealed books for guidance like,... geeta, plasms, torah, bible n quran ....so if u want to know about God just pick up anyof holy books n read it with an urge for understsndings for devinity n devine laws n u ll come to know...God created children from same parents, but these children are not the same in shape color height nature wealth a life span..This itself is an answer to the very existance of God n his wisdom in creation...krishna, adam, manu, jesus moses n mohamed etc didnt come with the messages wwithout any purpose but they were all chosen by God for guiding human race from time to time..The message is unique and universal which call for worship of and submission to only one God who is most high, powerful, eternal, merciful, planner, sustainer, destroyer, taker of account n rewarder of good n bad according to ones deeds...The God gave us his message through our own people n in our own language...Both Question paper n answer papers are already out n even after that if we fail in realising the answer for the question -who is God,, then the very purpose of our living is a waste n unfruitful exercise...Thats it my friend..You hv with you mighty bible in both old n new testaments n ten commandments..u read it to realise who God is....Bible was given to jesus with a purpose n not without any reason..please read n u ll find ur God who is one n the only...eternal n universal..

If Sai baba is God, who were his parents and grand parents and great grand parents - Gods parents and Gods grand parents and Gods great grand parents.. We believe we are all Gods creations and which implies we are all saibabas creations???? Who created Sai baba.. why is head...

As a muslim, I respect Saibaba and hold him in high esteem and follow his teachings of "sab ka malik ek hai" His preaching of communual harmony appeals all. He never said he is malik (God) but insisted that God is one and he never called for his worship..Shankaracharya truly accepted the msg of Saibaba and rightly said sai baba cant be God but a mortal dead man who was saint and pious. Only Creator is worthy of worship and none of His creations... how holy or saintly one may be.. That's it

Any creations of god, human beings, if they are pious n holy only can be called as saints n certainly cant be called as God.. God is only one n none is there to replace him. God is eternal n universal n is free from birth, death, lust, hunger, poverty etc.
God enlightens his chosen creations amongst mankind to preach His message of love n true path n path to salvation. All so called holy men or saints or prophets have been sent by God...who commanded us all to worship Him alone n submit to Him only. Those who worship other than the true n only God are a innovations n there is no authority on the worship of second God in any of religious scriptures or its commentaries...multiplicity of God is the creation of human mind n now these plurality of God has given millions of Indians ground to fight, hate, politics, power, business n money...in the process we forgot oneness of God..is it not shame to call any human being dead or alive as God..I dont mind calling them as holy, saints etc but I object to the very statement that calls for the worship n dietification of human beings....Thats it..I have written this only to earn the pleasure of God n not to incur his anger or wrath on us..

Deference in opinion about worship on deities is NORMAL but clashes is VERY FOOLISH ACTS!
Fighters are surely very selfish and dominating character, not influenced by God.
    Creator God loves every one.
He created everyone, who have different faith, culture, race, colour etc.
He surely want us to live harmoniously with different creations.
God has sent many prophets from time to time to teach us about God and how to live harmoniously.
None of the Prophets have criticized each other.

We do pray at least one or two times daily but we never indulge in going to some other religions believers house and saying your religion is not good and our religion is superior among all like many paid moral persons are doing in our region!!! Don’t believe, then pls come out from Puttur and make a few secret rounds in Udupi and Karkala region and you can find many prayer house where we can see no one is staying except prayer is going on with invited guests from other communities!!! ShriRama and Shrikrishna, whom we worship as Gods were infact lived on earth. Their intellectual level and philosophy were much higher than the normal human being. The population was less and so these living legends were worshipped. Later on , from genereation to generation when the story was transferred, bit of divinity is given at each stage and they are now perfect Gods. This is the same case with Jesus Christ too. Shirdi SaiBaba also comes in the same line.

I am sure after many more years, Mother Theresa and Amma are too worshipped as Gods.

So Swaroopanada Saraswathi (i will not prefix Shankaracharya in front of his name coz he doesnt deserve)has no business/right to attribute divinity/sainthood to anyone.

Shirdi Saibaba lived as agreat human being, bridged the gap between Hindus and Muslims and brought many souls to the right and just path. He remains and will remain a God to whoever believes so.

Dear Mr.Shankar, I don't know much about Vedas (I wont say Hinduism), but with my limited knowledge I know for sure that Sri Rama & Sri Krishna 7th & 9th Incarnations of Lord Vishnu and Jesus Christ is the Son of God himself, so you cannot really compare them with Mother Theresa or Amma or even with Sri Sai Baba though he was a great human being who lived an exceptionally pious and humble life like no other human being, so comparing human beings with Gods or their Avataras is wrong.

Sir, your comment is a very logical comment but putting JESUS CHRIST in the category of several other religious deities mentioned is totally out of place.

As a non-Christian, you have reverence for JESUS, that is great and I have seen the picture of JESUS CHRIST in so many Hindu homes. But JESUS CHRIST is unique in HIS birth, death and resurrection, and HE IS LIVING TODAY.

The virgin birth of JESUS by the word of GOD is mentioned in the Bible, Koran and in the sacred book of the Bahai religion. Also, these books are telling openly that JESUS CHRIST will come back to establish HIS kingdom of peace on earth. People of your caliber can do greater service to humanity, please study more about JESUS and write as you feel in the coming days.
