Four killed, in Mumbai-Pune Expressway accident


Navi Mumbai, Sep 16 (TNN): Four men were killed and 13 others were injured after a speeding truck rammed into a tempo that had broken down on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway around 13km ahead of the Khalapur toll plaza on Monday. The Khalapur police are looking for the unidentified truck driver.

The victims, all labourers, were travelling in the tempo from Pune towards the city.

"The tempo driver, Ganesh Rathod, said that around 12.50am, one of the tyres of his vehicle burst near Tembre village. He put on the parking lights and was replacing the tyre when the speeding truck rammed into the tempo from behind. Of the 16 labourers standing around the tempo, three died on the spot and one en route to the hospital. The highway traffic control received the emergency call around 1am and the injured were taken to MGM Hospital in Kamothe," said police sub-inspector Atigare.

The deceased were Haldar Bhagwan Mahatu (42) from Jharkhand, Yallapa Pujari (35) from Karnataka, Siddhesh Patil (25) from Dombivli and Premlal Manadu (33) from Borivli. "While 11 sustained minor injuries on their limbs, one suffered head injury. They were later shifted to NMMC Hospital," said a source from MGM Hospital.
