Mangalore, Oct 12: Don’t let the cabbie cap, brown shoes and curling moustache fool you. A former armyman, sprightly Michael D’Souza operates a cab even as he approached his 100th birthday on October 16, 2014.

C R Robert Michael D' Souza lives on Microwave Station Road, Hat Hill, and leads a solitary life maintaining his own garden, dog, and ducks.

D’Souza served in the British Indian Army under Field Marshal Cariappa. After he retired from the armed forces, he worked in the Public Works Department (PWD). After retiring from the PWD, he worked as a cab driver in places like Kinnigoli and Manipal.

Recalling his past and displaying his licence, D’Souza said, “I started driving at the of 18 as my father had a lorry in Ooty and I practiced with it. The British government issued me my licence which was later renewed.”

The Indian government issued him a licence in 1959 it was renewed again and is valid till 2019.

Though he turns 100 soon, D’Souza is physically fit and coyly says, “I have no BP or sugar even at this age.”
He goes late to bed but rises early at 4 am, since this was his practice from his days in the army. After losing his wife Eliza, he does all his work by himself. D’Souza always keeps himself active and is a true role model to the present generation.

Narendra Nayak, rationalist and a good friend of D’Souza said, “I have known him from the past 42 years. We used to go for walks and meet up. He used to approach me for suggestions when required. Really, I did not know that he was almost a hundred years old. But last year, when I asked his age I was really astonished to hear this. So, I assured him that his century will be celebrated and we friends have decided to do so. He is always active and even climbs multi-storied buildings without using the elevator".

D’Souza’s friends and neighbours have decided to honour the centenarian by holding a function at Canara College auditorium at 5 pm on Thursday October 16.

His actual name is CSR Michael but he's known as Michael D'souza probably because he speaks impeccable Roman Catholic Konkani despite of his mother tongue being Tamil.

May the Lord bless you many more years. Papa Michael...you are simply great personality. You have made me wonder...how young you look even at this ripe age of 100. ...I invite you to Canada to drive a cab with you British license. You can then enter Guinness book of record.

He will be applying for renewal of driving license again in 2019. Driving keeps him going. Meanwhile for the skeptics, it would be better to display a reliable birth certificate, just in case he has one. British were not fools to give him a license without checking his age, am sure.

    Dear Rudolf,
Since he got Driving License at young age, then got job in Army and then in PWD, definitely his age records should be true.
Moreover he will have baptism certificate as well.
Should be having some academic education as well.
In all these circumstances, his age proofs have to be true.

Dear Mr D'Souza, "100 years" of healthy life is God's gift bestowed on a chosen few. You are indeed an inspiration to many youngsters, especially Christians, to take up a career in defence services. Our whole family salutes and congratulates you on this special occasion.
My dad too, Mark Rodrigues now aged 92, has served in the British armed forces during World War II Middle East War Zone and was a POW in Europe for 3 years. He retired from defence services in 1982 and presently is here with us in Kadri. He too is healthy with no BP & diabetes.
Once again Congratulations and Best Wishes.

Really praiseworthy. He may be a good human being so God blessed him to this long life here on this earth. May God bless him more and more and live another century.

It is the result of disciplined army way of life and his regular activities, hard work and balanced diet must have made him live healthily so long. I have never come across a man who is driving at the age of 100.

He reminds me of my late father (ex army man) and lived up to 95 yrs. with out any major ailments.

Wishing Michael Bab a very happy & blessed 100th birth day. God bless.

Congratulations Michael. God Bless you. May you live more years. You are an inspiration not only young but even old. I always hear, children speaking about their parents. "he is old" "she is old". When I ask whats the age, its mostly betwen 50 and 60 years. Its the mindset and discouraging parents to do what they like to do. I mean work. A body which has been used, cannot be left idle. Dear Michael, you are a role model to all. You have kept yourself busy and thats the reason you are healthy and happy. God will bless you always. I congratulate people who will be celebrating your birthday on the 16th. They are your children. Have a great day. Wish you a very happy birthday in advance.
