Two Afghan lawyers killed in bomb attack

Kabul, Oct 16 (IANS): Two Afghan lawyers were killed in a bomb attack in the country's northern province of Baghlan Thursday, the latest in a string of targeted killings in the militancy-hit country, police said.

"A sticky bomb attached to a vehicle was detonated after two lawyers of Baghlan Provincial Court got into the vehicle near the court building at around midday, killing both on the spot," Abdul Ghafar, head of the criminal investigation department, told Xinhua.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, the source added.

The civilians considered to be supporting government, civilian government employees, religious leaders, tribal elders and persons involved in peace and reconciliation efforts have come under attack in targeted killings.

On Tuesday, the governor of Nad Ali district was killed along with a policeman, and six policemen were injured in an ambush by Taliban militants in the country's southern province of Helmand.

More than 1,560 civilians were killed and nearly 3,290 others wounded in conflicts and Taliban-led attacks in the first six months of 2014, according to official figures released by the UN mission in the country.

The officials blamed the attacks of Taliban insurgents and other armed groups for a vast majority of the civilian deaths.
