Diesel price down by Rs 3.64, Gas price hiked by 46%

NEW DELHI: Oct 19 (DHNS): The Centre on Saturday lifted control on diesel prices and hiked natural gas tariff by 46 per cent with an aim to usher in reforms in the petroleum and natural gas sector.

With this, the price of diesel will come down by Rs 3.64 per litre effective Saturday midnight in Bangalore and will cost Rs 60.43. The price move is in tandem with international prices from the next month.

Hike in natural gas prices, however, will increase fertilizer, PNG, CNG and gas-based electricity tariffs.

After deregulation, the government will no longer provide subsidy on diesel. “Henceforth, like petrol, pricing of diesel will be market determined,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters.

There are apprehensions that if the crude prices go up in the international market, the consumers will have to pay more for the fuel.

Brent crude in international market has fallen 25 per cent this year to around $83 per barrel and expectation is that it may not cross $100 a barrel anytime soon.

This will be the first reduction in diesel rates in over five years. Diesel prices were last cut on January 29, 2009, when they were reduced by Rs 2 a litre to Rs 30.86. Rates have since climbed to Rs 58.97. Diesel will now cost Rs 55.6 per litre in Delhi from Sunday.

Gas tariff hike

Against the backdrop of the recommendation to double gas prices to $8.4 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) by the Rangarajan Committee, which was cleared by the UPA government, the NDA government approved a 46 per cent increase.

The prices will go up from the current $4.2 per mmBtu to $5.61 per mmBtu from November 1 and rates will be revised every six months with the next revision being on April 1.

Rates for the gas produced by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance
Industries Limited (RIL) as well as state-owned ONGC will also be revised every six months with the next review on April 1.

The hike is not applicable to RIL’s Dhirubhai-1 and 3 gas fields in the KG-D6 basin till it makes up for the shortfall in production in the past four years.

RIL will get the higher price if it is able to prove legally that the fall in output was not deliberate and was due to geological reasons as it claims.

The natural gas price increase will result in CNG prices going up by Rs 4.25 per kg and piped cooking gas by Rs 2.6. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said states are being asked to cut taxes to reduce the burden.

Besides, tariff for power produced from gas will go up by about 90 paisa per unit and fertiliser production cost by almost Rs 2,720 per tonne.

The decision will not only ease the subsidy burden on the government, but will also encourage private players like RIL and Essar Oil to resume their retail operations.

Just a calculation for clear idea of how natural gas is cheaper than other hydrocarbon.
million British thermal unit(mmBtu)=27.9 cubic meter=27900 liters.

4.2 dollars per mmbtu is equivalent to 0.009182 Rupees per liter.
5.61 dollars per mmbtu is equivalent to 0.0122 Rupees per liter.
This is only for better understanding.

This is why Modi Govt changed priority of gas users. Now house hold connection & CNG vehicles will get first priority than indudtries like textiles & power.

Again you want give subsidy for Natural gas.Imported gas costs 22 dollar per mmBtu.After 3 years price raising by UPA now disel rates are in level with market. For me that is the only one good thing done by UPA.If you want natural gas to be sold below market price again govt to pay subsidy & doing the mistake done earlier with petrol & diesel. We are going one step ahead and asking govt to come back 4 steps??

Cannot understand why people not enjoy the price cuts when available instead of mud slinging. Both are dependent on world oil & gas market. One thing is good that now there is no subsidy on diesel which can be used for other good works. Most people unnessary blame ambani whenever the issue of gas pricing comes. There are other majors like ongc, gail also get profited whose market share is more than 65% and private investers should give royalty to goverment.

These BJPians are fed with some potion with which they are absolutely freed of any thinking power and wag their tails for anything & everything BJP leaders tell them. Otherwise they would have seen the cunning behind the negligible price cut in Diesel and removal of subsidy and very big hike in Gas.
Hope they stop taking the potion being fed to them and object vigorously such tactics by BJP for their own and others to benefit.

Most of you people who thinks that the current govt. Is responsible for this price are being taken for a ride.

Price is due to the international prices falling sharply.

In January 2013 Congress govt. deregulated the petrol prices. Which means that govt. will not control the rise and fall of the petrol price, whenever there is a rise in crude oil (from which both diesel and petrol are extracted) there will be a rise in petrol prices.

Similarly now current govt. has deregulated diesel prices at a time when international crude prices are down from $100 to $ 85 so in case tomorrow there is a rise in crude prices again (which is highly possible bcos crude is an exhaustible natural resource) there will be direct rise in diesel prices.

I am just waiting to watch people faces and reactions when diesel prices come close to petrol prices in the range of 5%.

As a thumb rule for refiners the whenever crude oil touches $100 the end users tend to use lesser so as to cut costs and whenever the crude prices go below $83 the oil producers cut down production to cut losses.

1.Decrease the price of diesel - it will have an impact on the transport industry.

2.Increase the price of LPG by 46 % - It will badly hit crores of middle class people....these are the very same middle class people had voted for BJP.

BJP = ullu banane wala - Bevkoof Janata party.

Lots of "gobar gas" units in village gets closed as the cows are being stolen profusely....

Grow cows and have Gobar Gas unit at home (applicable for those who have space around the house), which can help you to have free cooking gas and also reduces the burden of our brothers in city.

Similar "Kasadinda Rasa" program has to be taken up by NGOs and Daiji lovers in city / towns to help reducing cooking gas price.

Possible... As all the drains join the common point in the ground floor, it can be used provided there is 3 meter by 3 meter space... The amount is sufficient for cooking at least breakfast...

Otherwise, drains of all homes of a street to be connected to the Gobar Gas unit and can be sold to nearby restaurant...

Sophisticated units are available from Severn Trent and other manufacturers...

Return on investment is guaranteed and additional advantage of (a) foul smelling gases of decayed drain is no more (b) the byproduct coming out of the unit is excellent manure....

it should be always a "ALTERNATIVE FUEL" that should be used for COOKING, if u r hinting at that!...

its illogical to use a nonrenewable/exhausting resource for cooking!... Our elders have used wood and coal for cooking, including cow dung cakes for years...!!! use ur brains, sometime... but tell me what happend to $16 , ambani khaayega kinda allageations??

and r u telling me THERE HAVE BEEN NO IN BARREL OIL PRICES during UPA, that they never got diesel prices down for 7 years..??? are you kidding me??

    Very good move by Jaitley..

    1. they didnt do this prior to elections! so no appeasing , poll-n-account
    2. there have been steep fall global crude barrel price, even before, BUT NEVER EVER UPA , REDUCED DIESEL PRICE!!! reducing diesel price is important cos lot of transport happens via these diesel engine vehicles..

However I want a strong regulation, as to "NOT THOSE FUEL GUZZLING SUV" get these rates..!

    3. Cutting subsidies should be important.. slowly move towards NO SUBSIDIES!! it is draining the excehquer!! its like using the money meant for building schools/roads is spent on OIL...!! not a wise idea..

    4. Gas price Hikes, were expected... infact Kejriwal built a cmpaign around it!! going as far as "Dekho dekho woh log $16 maang rahe he"... 5.43$ price until next fiscal is a controlled hike and I am sure will stay that way... Govt has not yielded to AMbani pressures and also made Kejri eat crow in one step!... And also, this price hike was expected as, AMBANI WAS FINED HEAVILY for not meetign the expected target output of Nat,gas from KG basin!! ..all in all good day....

infact Jaitley, came back full force ... Ahemdabad Metro, Oil price, diesel price cut etc...! -)
hope he gets burnol prices down too... hahaha

When international price came down by more than 23 % Govt. must decrease price by at least 20% on diesel & Petrol.Instead it cut price by 4 %and increase gas price.

Is it Diesel price or crude price came down by 23 percent?
If crude price, then we have to through complex formulae as it depends upon the quality of crude and methods of distilling and producing Diesel.

Intelligent to give speeches and fooling public.
Diesel prices down by about 4% and Gas prices hiked 46%.
So effectively public have to SHELL OUT 41% MORE. Acchhe din.
Modi supporters will rise to his rescue,by saying LET'S PAY MORE NOW to brighten future.
Corrupt and fooling to the core, BJP is supporting Capitalists who have stashed black money abroad.
Only hope for India to have Labour party represented by WORKING CLASS, Farmers and Peasants who will know pain of POOR people and how these pro rich parties driving them backwards.
