Mangalore, Nov 13: The lockout of the 141-year-old Commonwealth Tile Factory, near Morgan's Gate Jeppu on Monday, Nov 13 resulted in the labourers' agitation, supported by various trade unions.
The management of the factory which pulled down the shutters of the factory had to face the ire of the labourers.
According to the trade union leader B Madhav, the factory had over 200 workers and its closure has been unlawful.
Labour organizations like CITU, INTUC and BMS have demanded that the government to stop this injustice meted to the workers of the factory.
Speaking to the media, Madhava said that the management has not considered all the suggestions given to them over a period of 4 years for improvement.
Tile industry sources said that this factory, established in 1865 by Germans, is believed to be the very first tile factory in India, and even possibly in the world.
