Mexican teachers storm offices to protest missing students

Chilpancingo (Mexico), Jan 8 (IANS/EFE): Mexican teachers have broken into various public buildings in the capital city of the Guerrero state in a continuation of their protests related to the disappearance of 43 students more than three months ago.

Around 30 members of the State Education Workers Coordinating Committee of Guerrero (CETEG) union arrived in trucks Wednesday at the offices of the undersecretary of finance of Guerrero's education ministry where they evacuated the staff and painted the number 43 on the walls.

They also burst into the offices of the National Electoral Institute (INE) to make sure that it remained closed following the teachers' last protest there a month ago.

The protesters said they would not allow scheduled elections to be held in Guerrero.

Elections of 500 federal deputies, the governments of nine states and 1,532 local posts are scheduled to be held in Mexico June 7.

After the stopover at the INE, the teachers moved to the State Congress facilities, where they painted the number 43 on vehicles in the parking lot.

They then arrived at the Government Palace where also they painted the numbers, and finally stormed into the local office of the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE) where they evicted the staff and smashed windows with stones.

The CETEG is nominally aligned with the SNTE that is opposing the education reforms of 2013, which eliminate the privileges of professional recruitment associations, retention and promotion of teaching personnel.

The CETEG has taken the lead among teacher associations in the protests against the disappearance of the 43 teacher trainees who went missing Sep 26 after an altercation with the police in the town of Iguala in Guerrero state.

They were reportedly handed over to a local criminal gang who killed them and burned their bodies.
