Mangalore, Apr 11: Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) will stage a protest in all the district centres on Wednesday April 18,  to project the demands of workers and peasants before the government.

Addressing the mediapersons here on Tuesday, CITU all India vice-president V J Nair said that the protest and rallies were mainly aimed to seek government's steps to check the price rise of essential commodities. The prices could be controlled only by means of peasant-friendly policy like subsidy for the agrarian inputs, support price, state procurement and public distribution system.

He said that the protest would also be to demand comprehensive central legislation for unorganized labour, including the agricultural labour.  It is necessary to enact an omnibus legislation to regulate service conditioned for all labour.

CITU's other demands are confirmation of  the anganavadi workers and to ensure their work and living conditions are improved, effective implementation of the employment guarantee scheme and to extend the  benefits to the poor in urban areas, rationalized custom duties on agriculture and traditional industry, proper implementation of the labour laws and minimum wages and amend the SEZ rules in order to safeguard the lives and interest of the peasant and the poor.

CITU state president B Madhava and district general secretary Vasanth Achari were also present on this occasion.
