Mangaluru, Jul 5: Though Falnir road had been renamed by the state government as 'Mother Teresa Road' a few years ago, the name was yet to be formally adopted.

In this regard, the parish community of Milagres has come forward and installed a 'Mother Teresa Road' signboard at Kankanady junction, where the Falnir road begins.

The 'Mother Teresa Road' signboard was unveiled on Sunday July 5 by superior of Mother Teresa Convent Sr Bernadette.

Addressing the gathering, mayor Jacintha Alfred said, "Mother Teresa began her missionary work with the poor. Mother Teresa was widely admired by many for her charitable work. She spent her life living for others. She helped the poor and destitute, and she will forever be remembered for her loving deeds. Everyone must remember her work and to do that we have named this road as 'Mother Teresa Road'.

Alwin Rosario from Milagres welcomed the gathering. Sr Bernadette thanked the state government, the mayor and others for their support.

T K Sudheer, Sunil Kumar Bajal, Ivan D'Souza, Sevil Mascarenhas, corporators A C Vinaya Raj, Naveen D'Souza, Milagres parish priest Fr Valerian D'Souza, former deputy mayor Judith Mascarenhas, Elias Fernandes and others were also present.

I dont know why some are keen in changing names of roads and streets, when around us the people are dying due to poverty, no jobs and sickness.

I dont think all the great personalities who did service to the poor and needy in the society without thinking of their personal gains, want any roads or streets to be named after their name.

I request that lets do something for the society than changing the names of roads and streets and doing nothing.

In future we dont know where all this will lead to.

It is difficult for the people to remember the road name when someone ask the directions. Give any short name like MT Road (Mother Teresa) , so that people can easily remember the road name and tell the route. :)

Why is this controversy on this.
Whether it was Lady Britto road longtime back, but everyone addressed this as Falnir Road, all the time. There was no name plaque for this road.
Even google maps addressed this road as Mother Teresa Road for more than a year, in their maps, because it was officially sanctioned as such for a while.
I think it could be Mother Teresa Road for a while, till another name is chosen after some years.
Incidentally MG Road and KS Rao Road are living for a long time.

What's the big deal? Just naming the road to some famous personality what difference it will make? What kind of changes you will bring in to the society? At least pledge that you will keep this road clean and tidy.

    Good work, congrates.
but regret to read a comment from one "salam" saying naming is not victory, there should be some help to needy and poor.
my reply to this person from malaysia.
mr. salam, Mother Theresa road has been inaugurated, not mother Theresa ashram inaugurated today on the road. please note.
do you think that there should be charitable house on the road? is there such facility in Malaysia?
One more thing is that if you are talking about HELP this road is not named for Christian community. if any charity organization is set then you can also join and donate something from your pocket, because all humankind walk and travel on this road. and if you are allergic about the name then please visit the mother Theresa's convent which is located in the same area then you would come to know what charity and help is being done from that house. PRAYING FOR HUMAN KIND is one of the biggest charity, which is being done over there. the name MOTHER THERESA stands for help, charity, humanity, prayers, brotherly-hood,love, affection and life saving. perhaps it may be missing in Malaysia.
please do not comment on such matter which you do not know.
yes of course.this is victory in recollecting the name of saint of gutters, victory for her memory reminded amongst all man kind, victory in hailing her great work to the poor and needy in the name of Jesus Christ. and this is an indication to the faithful to continue the service by keeping her name where the faithful walk everyday. May the name of Mother Theresa be glorified.

    Rudolf falnir,
Blessed Theresa was one of the greatest souls that lived. But she would Never Dishonor anyone to gain honor.
With all due respects to her my only question to the members of the naming committee is , aren't there enough nameless roads to choose from, do you have to Dishonor someone to Honor someone else ? Mother theresa was too noble to do so.

This is indeed a great event in the history of Mangalore City. Mother Teresa of sacred memory has done yeomen service to the poor in India. Her coming to Mangalore some years ago was a very welcome event. I had the pleasure to meet and it was the former Bishop Basil who indeed took the trouble to invite me to spend a few quality minutes with her.

Mother Teresa's community was invited to Mangalore some years ago thanks to the efforts of Chevalier Clarence Pais and they opened their house in Falnir at the courtesy of a philanthropist.

They moved to their new place of residence - residence of the poor and neglected some time ago where they render great service to the poor and the neglected.

The naming of the road after her was long pending despite the government sanction. I am glad that all is clear now and WE HAVE A MOTHER TERESA ROAD.

Long live Mother Teresa - long live her homes all over the world. May her memory linger in the hearts of many.

Mr Prabhu I missed reading your views about Lady Mary Britto. It is the mistake of the local administration which has forgotten the localite Lady Britto's services so soon. If my memory serves me right, Ms Britto's house was next to St Marys Convent Falnir. Anyways localites should take it up with the leaders there and educate them. Over a period of time we need not be surprised if even Mother Teresa's name will be removed and somebody else's name replaced.Chances of people like Lalit Modi and others finding a road named after them cannot be ruled out.

    Sir,
The state govt did not name the road it was the corporation which suggested the same.
This road name was a tussle between Shivram karanth and mother Theresa. Then it was revealed that this road in 1964 was named after a lady Mary Britto who was a freedom fighter, a municipal councilor un contested for 23 years from Falnir wad. Was responsible for widening hampangatta - kankanady road which was a narrow 15 feet lane. The sisters who were Noble enough refused to dishonour this lady and thus the name remained the same and no board was installed.
She was the founder member of the Congress in mangalore and it is shocking shame that the members today don't have any regard to a freedom fighter ex congress founder/councilor and a social worker.
She has done a lot for the poor in mangalore.

    Dear Valerian,

I agree with AN Prabhu - the road was already named after a resident Mangalorean who is said to have deserved the honour.
However, if anyone really wants to honour Mother Theresa - it would be better done by imbibing her qualities and values she honoured during her lifetime.

Keeping her remembrance alive by naming a street or road is good but definitely not what she would have wanted. In order to remember her we should keep up her good work of charity that's how we can pay true tribute to her. May her soul rest in peace and hope people will remember her greatness for Centuries.
