Mangalore, May 21: “Though not to full extent, but for a part of it, Muslims in India do have a minority complex, a fear of losing their identity. This has prevented them for long to bring about any changes in their personal laws. This has indeed affected the people and the community at large,” observed Justice Rajinder Sachar, former judge of Supreme Court and chairman of Sachar Committee.
Comparing the Muslims with the Hindus in Banglasdesh, he said that the latter do suffer from similar complex which has prevented them from giving inheritance rights to daughters as they think it is against Hindu culture and tradition. “However, Hindus in India have given inheritance rights to women in 1954 itself,” he added.
He further said that at least two women should be included in Waqf Board as women can comprehend various problems faced either by the individuals or society in a better manner than men.
