Belthangady: Extortion with woman's help - seven arrested

Belthangady, Jul 31: In connection with the case in which a gang had tried to force Abdul Basheer from Loretto Padavu in Bantwal to part with ten lac rupees after trapping him with the help of a woman, the police have succeeded in arresting seven members of the gang.

The gang had trapped Abdul Basheer by asking him through one of his friends to pick up a lady and drop her off at Ujire, and then intercepting the auto rickshaw and alleging immoral activity. The gang had forced him to pose for photographs with the woman, and then threatened to create problems for him with the help of photos and video they had captured. An extortion bid for ten lac rupees was also made, and Basheer was taken to a secluded place and beaten up before that.

Asif Goliangady, Latif, Shabbir, Abubakker, Sulaiman, Majeed and Hashim have been arrested so far. The policemen are preparing to arrest the other culprits including the woman who played a stellar role in this drama. As per the calculation, the gang had 12 members.

The timely action of the police team has come in for lavish praise from the people of the region.
